Rotary Club of the Abingtons We meet every Thursday at 12:10 PM at Camelot, 17 Johnson Rd., Clarks Summit, PA. In 1924, a men’s social club, known as the “Abington Men’s Club” was created.

In 1928 they were approached by members of the Scranton Rotary Club seeking to convert their men’s club into an official Rotary club. A meeting was agreed upon and 5 interested men met with 2 members of the Scranton Rotary in the medical office of Dr. H. Eugene Simrell in Clarks Summit. After the meeting, the Men’s Club agreed to form a new chapter of Rotary International. A week later, on February 14, 1928, the first gathering of the new club was held in Herman Cole’s Funeral Home, located on State Street in Clarks Summit. It was presided over by Col. Ezra H. Ripple, Jr. The first club officers were:
President - Howard Isby, a local druggist and owner of Isby Pharmacy;
Vice President - Dr. H. Eugene Simrell, a prominent physician;
Secretary – Loyal Bunnell, Owner of Bunnell’s Hardware Store;
Treasurer – George Sharps, a local banker; and,
Directors - Ward Parker, an insurance executive, and Dr. Thomas Rutherford

Rotary officially chartered the Clarks Summit Rotary Club on March 6, 1929, which celebrated charter night March 21 at the Clarks Summit Presbyterian Church with 183 persons in attendance. Their first actual Rotary meeting was held at the Abington Women’s Club building on the 400 block of School Street in Clarks Summit.

We were privileged to be volunteers at the 2026 Youth Leaders Public Health Summit at Geisinger School of Health Sciences sponsored by Rotary District 7410. Over 100 students from 11 local high schools were invited to attend. The speakers were engaging and informative. It was an excellent experience for all!

What you missed last Thursday - join us THIS THURSDAY to hear a presentation by Julie Esty on the Dunmore Cemetery Tour - reservations necessary. Message us for yours if you are not a member yet.

Chris, Tata, and Anita attended the first Interact meeting at AHHS. According to Chris's quick head count, there were 85 students in attendance. They have several volunteer efforts already on their schedule for September and October. One of them is Plarn Making on Friday 9/25 in the HS library. Rotarians are welcome to attend! Our own Leah Rudolph will be leading this effort! Chris spent a few minutes talking up the Rotary Exchange program and introduced Revarti.

Steve and Chris recapped the Hillside Park meeting they attended. The positives and negatives of our Fireworks event were discussed. There were complaints from the Master Gardeners about the pollution and debris from the Fireworks. Thankfully, there were Hillside staff that kept an eye of the gardens and refuted their complaints. All in all, the event was viewed positively.

Steve confirmed that Camelot will serve our Thanksgiving lunch on 11/19. We will provide the dessert (pies), as we usually do.

World Polio Day is 10/24/26. The event at the Geisinger Medical college is 10/22. The basket raffle will be held at Coopers Seafood from 10/9 through 10/24. If you are able to donate a basket or would like to contribute toward one, please let Anita Nealon or Marcia Loughman know.

Nancy Sarno de los Rios asked us to pass along information about "Give Like Dolly Day" on 9/25 (nine two five..get it??!!) The day is about raising money for the Dolly Parton Library. Look for information! For those who don't know, the Dolly Parton Library program, administered by local United Way agencies, sends one book a month, free of charge, to children from birth to five years old. The Lackawanna United Way will have representatives around on Fourth Friday in Clarks Summit.

November 13th is the official kickoff of the Salvation Army Red Kettle effort. We will be ringing at the State Store in Chinchilla, as usual. The ringing concludes on Christmas Eve. Steve asked if we could do a Happy Hour with a purpose and bring a Red Kettle with us. All in attendance liked the idea.

Gail remarked that the UNC coat drive has begun. There is a box in the lobby of Camelot. All sizes of coats, children and adult, are requested. New and gently used coats are being accepted. Check your closets!

Again, it was noted, how well Revatii is adjusting to life here, and how friendly and personable she is. Chris took her to a Rotary weekend gathering with other exchange students, and apparently, she is a very talented dancer...not only traditional Indian dancing but square dancing, as well!

Diane, our Sergeant At Arms, called the Camelot staff over so we could thank them. They were nervous that they were in trouble at first but were relieved when we told them how much we appreciate their attentive service each week.

The Trail Rotary Club is having an All You Can Eat Breakfast on Sunday October 18th at the Factoryville Fire Station Hall from 8:30am - noon. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors and $8 for kids older than 5. Several of us attended last year's breakfast and plan to go again this year. They have a basket raffle, as well.

It was nice to see so many friendly discussions occurring around the lunch table. We hope to see more members next week! James Baker is planning to attend!

The highlight of the lunch was a moving speech about 9/11, and the importance of remembering the events of that day in 2001, given by Terry Dietz. Several members shared memories of where they were when the towers were struck and how they found out about what was going on. Our world changed 25 years ago. Please take a moment tomorrow to remember those who lost their lives.

Thank you. Hope to see you soon! We meet Thursdays at noon at Camelot for lunch. Drop us a note for more information.
