Trees provide deep-rooting carbon sequestration, nitrogen fixation, erosion control, biodiversity corridors, and long-term soil structure, some of the most powerful regenerative benefits available to any farming system. Meanwhile, the reforestation and forest restoration sector has been scaling rapidly, with satellite monitoring, carbon markets, and nature-based investment funds operating largely in parallel to the regenerative agriculture movement. Locke's piece asks why these two fields, operating on the same landscapes with the same farmers and the same urgent timeline, have not been formally brought together.

We have 7 Seasons on The Preserve! The 4 traditional and also Mud in the Spring, Bugs in the summer and now we start LEAF Season! We are about 50% Color and Leaves are starting to drop! For most of the property we let things go but still a lot of work just keeping the leaves managed around the buildings and meadow areas! In those areas we mostly grind with the mower, We bag a bit and transfer to our several Leaf Mold and Compost Piles but everything stays onsite and regenerates back into the soil. Any guess how many leaves we have on the property?

Our little Island, Up until 1970 there were only 4 houses and 20 people in the entire red footprint that is today the Deerwoods. Today there are 430 houses and over 1600 people using that same land. Could have been worse without the protections our family chose to employ on the green box that is today the Prospect Hill Nature Preserve. It wasn't easy or always popular but we think it was worth it.

Do We Belong to the Land or Does the Land Belong to Us?
A great thought provoker from our guest Carol Egbo, Oakland County Park Historian at our Meet The Preserve Event this week. My answer is its a balance. In this day and age to Protect the land you have to control the Ownership to be its defender and ambassador but between you and it a partnership and a co-dependency can develop!
