Wednesday Wildlife Trivia!!!
This photo was taken and sent to me by one of our volunteer characters at the Halloween Hikes last night at Heery Woods (but we zoomed in a bit further that she did).
Can you identify this plant? If so, place your answer in the comments, and check back Friday to find out if you are correct.

HALLOWEEN HIKES ARE TOMORROW NIGHT!!!!
If you have been waiting to make sure the weather will be good, now is the time to call us (319-346-6551) to make your reservations. The weather is going to be beautiful tomorrow night. We have about 15 spots left in the 6:45 hike time, but we might be able to squeeze a few more into the 6:00, 6:15, or 6:30 times if all the hike fill up.
Our naturalist is playing the part of the Alien Invasive - Winged Burning Bush. But you will also meet other aliens like the Eurasian Collared Dove, Asian Lady Beetle, Rusty Crayfish, and a native mussel being bugged by a Zebra Mussel or two.
This event is FREE and includes the educational hike through the dark woodland as well as treats and hot cocoa in the lodge after.
Hikes take place at Heery Woods Park (on the South Side by the Lodge). Be there!!!
All donations will be used for future educational programming and events.

We are just ONE WEEK AWAY FROM HALLOWEEN HIKES!!!!

Have you made your reservation yet? If not, spots are filling fast! The 6:00, 6:15 and 6:30 hike times are full, but there is still room in the 6:45 PM hike on October 20. Hike take place on the south side of Heery Woods Park.

They are free, and suitable for all ages.

If you have never been to one of these hikes, here are some things you should know.
- These are non scary and FREE hikes
- local naturalists and volunteers dress up as characters pertaining to the theme of the year (This year it is ALIENS!)
- You walk a short distance between characters to learn about each one
- After the walk, you can have homemade treats and hot cocoa in the lodge
- Hikes take place every 15 minutes from 6:00 to 6:45 and last about 40 minutes each
- The characters are not only educational but also quite funny (maybe just our opinion but find out for yourself)
- You can register online at mycountyparks.com - if you are having difficulties, call Annette at 319-346-6551. We will make sure you get registered.

Our alien characters this year (left to right in the picture) are Winged Burning Bush, Asian Lady Beetle, Eurasian Collared Dove, Rusty Crayfish and a native mussel bother by Zebra Mussels.

This last Tuesday we partnered with Butler County ISU Extension on a Witches Broom Decoration Class. We used materials gathered from our ditches, prairies, and woodlands to create decorations for our walls, porches and lawns. It was a fun evening watching creative people do creative things. I am always impressed what people can create from the most basic of supplies. And after it was done, we all rode off into the moonlit night ..... well, loaded our broomsticks and drove home on the moonlit night. Thank you to the extension office and all who attended.

We had a great time last week hosting students from Dike-New Hartford School for School of the Wild. We got to teach them how to identify trees using a dichotomous key, which included a walk through the woods. On that walk, we scaled a fallen tree on the trail and crossed a small creek to reach our destination. We also worked on our hunting skills. All groups played a hunting game where they build a "hunting blind" and become hunters and deer. They learn how to make the job of their hunter easier through multiple rounds. Some groups chose to throw spears with atl atls and others chose to shoot targets with bows and arrows. No matter what, we learned safety and skills and so much more. Thanks for coming out - even in some not so great weather.

Wednesday Wildlife Trivia!!
We will keep it pretty simple this week. These little guys usually stay well camouflaged, but this one climbed the wrong "tree" (aka a human leg).
Tell us what you think it to be, and we will give the answer on Friday morning.

Annette will be at a Harvest Moon Festival at Wilder Park on Saturday, October 3 from 11 AM to 3 PM! We will be doing some Dutch Oven Cooking Demos and tastings, and we will also have information on Butler County Conservation Board, mystery boxes and a touch table full of fun stuff. There may even be a couple live animals travelling along. You will have to stop by and see us to find out who is coming along.

And there is an omelet breakfast in the morning before all the other activities start. So come early and support the lion's club by eating a hearty breakfast.
