🚨 Telecommunicator Week Spotlight: Rebecca Reed 🚨
We’re proud to highlight Rebecca Reed, Lead Dispatcher 👏
🕰️ Years of service:
Over 8 years
💙 What is the most challenging part of the job?
Probably managing multiple things at once, talking to a caller, communicating with responders over the radio, entering information, and coordinating help. It can be a lot at once, but staying organized and focused makes a big difference.
📞 What is something the public often misunderstands about 911?
We don’t always have perfect location information. Even if a system shows a general location, we still need the caller to confirm the address to make sure help goes to the right place. People also think there are always lots of call takers available, but in reality, it can be a small team handling multiple emergencies. That’s why staying calm and answering questions clearly is so important.
❤️ What does serving your community mean to you?
Serving the community means taking responsibility for helping keep people safe. It’s about doing my job well so others can get the help they need without delay.
👥 What does leadership mean to you in your role?
Leadership means staying calm, setting a good example, and being someone others can rely on during stressful situations. It’s not just about being in charge, but about supporting your team and helping things run smoothly.
🚑 Message to the public:
Give your location first. That’s the most important part of the call because we can’t send help without it. It doesn’t matter if you start by saying it’s an emergency, we still need to know where you are right away. If you’re driving, even the road or a nearby intersection helps. Details like license plates are useful, but location comes first.
✨ Something you might not know:
I have an identical twin! She also used to work in dispatch and now works in an administrative position with the City Homicide Department, so public safety is something we both ended up being a part of.
👏 Thank you, Rebecca, for your leadership, dedication, and commitment to keeping the community safe!
