Check out a banned book this week!

Let books be.

Today kicks off , an annual observation started more than 40 years ago in response to a sudden surge in the number of attempts to censor or remove books in libraries, schools, and bookstores. Sound familiar?

Today, libraries continue to face record numbers of challenges to the books on their shelves. And contrary to common narratives suggesting that concerned parents are driving these challenges, data from ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom suggests otherwise – 92% of these challenges came from pressure groups and government officials in 2025.

For this year's Banned Books Week, we remind our communities that a handful of people running organized censorship campaigns should not be allowed to dictate what the rest of us can read, and that the joy and creativity of reading is not only an act of resistance, but a freedom that must be protected.

Find ways to get involved and spread the word, censorship data, and events throughout the week at https://bit.ly/4yvixbB.

Claverack Free Library Celebrates Volunteer Firefighters with Special Movie Night
CLAVERACK, NY — Who protects our community when an emergency strikes? Our neighbors do! The Claverack Free Library invites the community to a special movie night on Friday, October 16, 2026, at 6:00 PM, featuring a free screening of the inspiring documentary Odd Hours, No Pay, Cool Hat.
This event is part of The Great Give Back, a statewide initiative encouraging New Yorkers to give back to their communities through volunteerism and service.
The film takes viewers behind the scenes of America’s volunteer fire service, sharing the heartwarming, humorous, and thrilling stories of everyday people who answer the call to help their neighbors. It offers a glimpse into the dedication, challenges, and camaraderie that make volunteer firefighters such an important part of our communities.
But the evening is about more than just a movie!
Following the screening, volunteers from the A.B. Shaw Fire Department and Mellenville Fire Department will be on hand to answer questions about volunteering and share their experiences. Attendees will also have the opportunity to see real firefighting gear and equipment up close and learn more about what it takes to serve as a volunteer firefighter.
Whether you’ve ever considered joining a fire department, want to learn more about the people who protect our community, or simply enjoy a great movie with your neighbors, this event is for you!
Light refreshments will be served.
The Claverack Free Library is excited to participate in The Great Give Back and celebrate the neighbors who give their time, energy, and skills to help keep our communities safe.
