You never know what the school day might bring. For School Resource Officer Ruffin, this morning meant joining kindergarten students at Cooper Academy for a little fire safety fun with the Clayton Fire Department.

From helping in the classroom to building relationships with students, our School Resource Officers do a little bit of everything throughout the day.

And when there's a chance to team up with our fellow first responders, we're happy to jump in.

Walking to school looked a little different this morning at Powhatan Elementary School.

We joined students and families for Walk to School Day, helping everyone start the day with a focus on staying safe while walking, biking, or rolling to school.

It was great to see such a strong turnout and so many families practicing safe habits together. Events like this are also a good reminder for drivers to slow down, stay alert, and watch for students near schools and crosswalks.

Our officers spent Tuesday morning talking with drivers during Operation Clear Track and sharing reminders that can help the next time they approach the tracks.

Another successful Women’s Self Defense Class completed!

Participants practiced techniques, learned how to use their bodies effectively, and made time for themselves in a supportive environment along others doing the same. These ladies came to build confidence, step out of their comfort zones, and walked away feeling empowered.

We are hoping to add another class, so keep following us for updates.

Today is the 25th anniversary of the loss of Lt. Monica Carey.
Our flags will be lowered at half-staff, and our officers will be wearing mourning badges in her honor. On Sept. 14, 2001, just three days after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Lt. Carey was killed in the line of duty when a suspected drug dealer backed over her with a motor vehicle. The suspect was shot and killed by officers on the scene.
Lt. Carey was the Commander of the Investigative Service Division, and her death had a tremendous impact on the police department. She was highly regarded & instrumental in the operations of the department. Lieutenant Carey had served with the Clayton Police Department for two years and had previously served with other agencies for eight years.
Lt. Carey is survived by her son who is now a New Hanover Sheriff Deputy, her daughter and three grandsons.
The Clayton Police Department will never forget her service or her sacrifice.

What’s inside a police cruiser? These kiddos got to find out!

Community Service Officer Duran recently stopped by The Nest Schools Clayton-Middleton for its 3rd Annual Field Day and St. Jude Trike-A-Thon.

Families were able to check out the cruiser, pick up some Clayton Police stickers, and spend time with Officer Duran.

A visit like this gives kids a chance to meet an officer, ask questions, and get comfortable with the people they may see around Clayton. Those small interactions can help build familiarity and trust from an early age.
