Difficult decisions must be made for the financial health of our County. Today, I directed the Department of Transportation and Public Works to stop negotiations for a lease for a new County headquarters. The reason is straightforward: without new recurring revenue we can’t take on new recurring expenses. We must establish priorities and my priority is the people who deliver County services over the building where they deliver them.

I want County employees to hear something clearly. I know who keeps St. Louis County government running. It’s the police officer patrolling a neighborhood, the worker patching a pothole, the parks employee rebuilding historic buildings, and the thousands of other public servants our residents rely upon daily.

September 28 through October 4 is Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD) Awareness Week in Saint Louis County.

I was proud to present a proclamation recognizing FTD Awareness Week and helping raise awareness of this devastating disease. Greater awareness can help lead to earlier diagnosis, greater understanding and more support for individuals and families affected by FTD.

Thank you to everyone working to bring greater awareness to FTD in our community.

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Saint Louis County. I recently presented a proclamation to Mellve Shahid, Sr., Co-Founder and Executive Director of The Empowerment Network, Inc., recognizing this important month.

Prostate cancer is a serious public health issue, and early detection can make a difference. Thank you to Mellve and The Empowerment Network for their work to raise awareness, promote screening and support our community.

ALPR cameras can be a valuable law enforcement tool but the potential for misuse is alarming. We have been reviewing how cameras are used on Right of Ways in St. Louis County. Governor Kehoe’s executive order is a good first step.

Protecting citizens also means protecting their constitutional rights.

Today, I signed Executive Order 26-18, establishing strict safeguards on the use of Automated License Plate Reader technology to prevent the misuse of the personal location data of Missourians while preserving legitimate law enforcement uses of the technology.

Yesterday, I signed Bills 150, 151 and 152, accepting grants that will support the St. Louis County Police Department and strengthen public safety in our community.

Public safety has been a cornerstone of my administration, and these grants are an important investment in our officers.

But grants alone cannot address the larger budget challenge facing the Police Department. Without additional revenue, we are facing cuts to the police budget in 2027. The County Council has until October 1 to act on property tax rates.

I am not in favor of cutting public safety. We need to make sure our officers have the resources they need to protect our communities.

Statement on Riverview Police Department:

I am proud of the St. Louis County Police Department for stepping up to help the residents of Riverview after their police department dissolved today. This is why we cannot allow the County Council to defund the police. The St. Louis County Police Department will answer 911 calls and calls for service, as required by our Charter. Our officers stand ready to help.

A stronger transit system means greater opportunity for our entire region.

Yesterday, we celebrated the completion of Bi-State Development and Metro Transit’s $62 million Secure Platform Plan and the rollout of the Next Generation Fare system. These are important investments that will strengthen our transit network and help residents travel with confidence. Grateful to all of the partners who helped make this milestone possible.
