๐Ÿšง๐—›๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐˜€ ๐˜‚๐—ฝ, ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ธ๐˜€! The Highway 245 expansion project is ramping up this week. Crews will begin blasting work from the Bernheim service road/Jim Beam employee entrance heading west to Mac's Lake. Blasting is expected to take place on weekdays between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. If you're traveling on Highway 245 plan for traffic delays, temporary road closures of 10 minutes or more, and possible lane shifts. Blasting is expected to continue over the next three weeks.

The good news? At this time, the Bernheim main entrance is open. It's a beautiful time to take a walk in the forest! ๐Ÿ‚We'll keep you updated as the construction progresses. Thank you for your patience as we work together to keep your visit safe and enjoyable!

Last week, members of our horticulture team explored our cypress-tupelo swamp, surveying the collection on Lake Nevin. Trees in this five-acre swamp were planted in 2005 to offset the wood used for building the Visitor Center. ๐—™๐˜‚๐—ป ๐—™๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜: The building was partially constructed with recycled wood once used in pickle vats in a Heinz factory.

Check out this eastern box turtle Horticulturalist Katie Glauber helped this reptile friend cross the road this week at Bernheim. She noticed how the shell pattern was similar to nearby fallen leaves. Dark brown shells with yellow, orange or red markings, help camouflage eastern box turtles on the forest floor. Unlike other turtle species, the eastern box turtle has a hinged lower shell, called a plastron. When threatened, the turtle can pull in its head, tail, and legs and close its shell all the way, protecting it from potential predators.

Eastern box turtles are usually found near ponds, fields, meadows and woodlands. Their estimated home range is small with a diameter of only 750 feet. Their diet is varied and can consist of plants, mushrooms, small amphibians, fish, eggs, and even animal carrion. As they munch on mayapple fruit, the seeds often pass through their digestive systems.

In June, we welcomed KET - Kentucky Educational Television to explore the world of fireflies and capture their mesmerizing light show in our forest. The segment aired on October 3 on the season premiere of Kentucky Life - KET.

Also known as lightning bugs, these bioluminescent beetles are threatened due to habitat loss, light pollution, and pesticides. At Bernheim, we're committed to protecting their habitats and inspiring others to safeguard these magical creatures.

Watch the "The Hidden World of Kentucky's Fireflies" and hear from Bernheim's Volunteer Naturalist Jonathan Shirley, Research Coordinator Kelly Vowels, and Jonathan Larson, Extension Entomologist at the University of Kentucky. You'll learn more about fireflies, including simple things you can do to help protect them for generations to come. https://youtu.be/hkm9IdDTgfY?si=Lnj6zOBsY1oUnvqz
