Update: We are still working diligently with stakeholders and the team at Cresco to make the restoration and revitalization of the Variety Theater block a reality.
The most important stakeholders are the neighbors, the people that work and live near the Variety. Last week, I was there to meet a utility worker and as soon as I got there, I noticed a new break-in, a smashed glass storefront door. This has happened dozens of times, BUT this time, a neighbor was pulling up to the 118th and Lorain stop sign at that exact moment. He pulled over and parked his car. He told me he remembered meeting me when I painted the mural on the building and he lives on 118th. He said, “let me run home and grab some tools, I’ll fix this for you right now.” And he came right back and boarded up that door. I don’t have adequate words to express my gratitude!
Thank you, Dennis! Your kindness, generosity and support that day continue to motivate, inspire and ground me, and remind me of why I wanted to take on this project- it’s about the people, it’s about community.
We will keep doing EVERYTHING we can to ensure the Variety becomes a positive asset for the neighborhood again🙏🥹💪
