๐Ÿ“… SEPTEMBER IS ENDING. PREPAREDNESS ISN'T.
Throughout National Preparedness Month, we've talked about emergency kits, severe weather, flooding, winter storms, family plans, emergency communications, and knowing when to call for help.
But preparedness isn't just for September.
Emergencies don't check the calendar.
โ›ˆ๏ธ Severe weather can develop quickly.
๐Ÿ”ฅ Fires can happen without warning.
โšก Power outages can last longer than expected.
๐ŸŒŠ Flooding can make familiar roads dangerous.
โ„๏ธ Winter weather can change conditions in a matter of hours.
๐Ÿšจ And sometimes emergencies happen on perfectly ordinary days.
Preparedness is something we practice every day.
๐Ÿฅซ Keep your emergency supplies stocked and rotate stored food regularly.
๐Ÿ“‹ Review and update your family's emergency plan as things change.
๐Ÿ“ž Keep emergency contacts and important information current.
๐ŸŽ’ Periodically check your home and vehicle emergency kits.
๐Ÿ“ฑ Sign up for local emergency alerts and make sure you have multiple ways to receive warnings.
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง Talk about your plan with your familyโ€”and make sure everyone knows what to do.
๐Ÿค Check on neighbors, family members, and others who may need help during an emergency.
Most importantly, pay attention to what's happening around you.
Don't wait until the storm is approaching, the lights go out, or the emergency is already happening to start preparing.
๐Ÿšจ EVERY DAY MATTERS.
BE AWARE.
STAY INFORMED.
HAVE A PLAN.
BE PREPARED.
National Preparedness Month may be ending, but a prepared White County is something we can work toward 365 days a year.

๐Ÿšจ NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH: DONโ€™T JUST PREPAREโ€”STAY PREPARED!
You built the kit. You stocked the pantry. You made the plan.
But preparedness isn't something you do once and forget about. Your supplies, information, and family needs change over time.
Before National Preparedness Month comes to an end, take a few minutes to give your emergency preparations a checkup:
๐Ÿฅซ ROTATE YOUR EMERGENCY FOOD & WATER
Check expiration and best-by dates. Use older items in your regular meals and replace them with fresh supplies. Don't forget medications, pet food, batteries, and other items that may expire or need replacing.
๐Ÿ“‹ UPDATE YOUR EMERGENCY PLAN
Has anything changed? Review:
โ€ข Phone numbers and emergency contacts
โ€ข Your out-of-area contact
โ€ข Family meeting and safety locations
โ€ข School and workplace information
โ€ข Medical information and medications
โ€ข Insurance and important documents
โ€ข Plans for children, pets, older adults, and anyone who may need additional assistance
๐ŸŽ’ CHECK YOUR KITS
Look through your home, vehicle, and grab-and-go emergency kits. Replace anything that has expired, leaked, been used, or no longer meets your family's needs.
๐Ÿ“ฑ SIGN UP FOR LOCAL EMERGENCY ALERTS
Don't depend on social media alone for emergency information. Make sure you're registered for your local emergency notification system and that your contact information is current.
โฐ MAKE IT A HABIT!
Set a reminder to review your emergency supplies and plans at least twice a year. The time change or beginning of spring and fall can be an easy reminder.
Preparedness isn't about expecting the worst. It's about making sure you're ready when the unexpected happens.
EVERY DAY MATTERS. BE AWARE. BE INFORMED. BE PREPARED.

โ„๏ธ๐ŸงŠ NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH: PREPARING NOW FOR WINTER WEATHER TO BE READY WHEN IT DOES COME ๐ŸงŠโ„๏ธ

Snow may not be an everyday occurrence in White County, but winter storms, freezing temperatures, snow, and ice can create dangerous conditions quickly.

A little preparation now can make a BIG difference when winter weather arrives!

๐Ÿ  PREPARE YOUR HOME

Before winter weather is in the forecast:

๐Ÿ’ง Protect exposed pipes from freezing and know how to shut off your home's water supply.
๐Ÿ”ฆ Have flashlights, batteries, and backup lighting available.
๐Ÿ”‹ Keep phones and portable battery banks charged.
๐Ÿฅซ Maintain several days of food, drinking water, medications, and other essentials.
๐Ÿพ Don't forget food and supplies for your pets!
๐Ÿงฅ Have plenty of warm clothing, blankets, and sleeping bags available in case you lose heat.
๐Ÿ“ป Have more than one way to receive weather and emergency alerts.

โšก BE READY FOR POWER OUTAGES

Ice can accumulate on trees and power lines, potentially causing extended outages.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Never use a grill, camp stove, generator, or other fuel-burning equipment inside your home, garage, or other enclosed area. Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and can be deadly.

๐Ÿ  If using a fireplace, wood stove, or other approved heating source, make sure it is properly maintained and used safely.

๐Ÿšจ Make sure your home has working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

๐Ÿš— AVOID TRAVEL WHEN CONDITIONS ARE DANGEROUS

Snow is only part of the problem. ICE can make roads extremely hazardousโ€”even when a roadway looks clear.

๐ŸงŠ Watch for ice on bridges, overpasses, shaded roads, hills, and less-traveled roadways.
๐Ÿš— If officials recommend staying off the roads, please do so whenever possible.
๐Ÿ“ If you must travel, slow down and leave plenty of additional distance between vehicles.
๐ŸŽ’ Keep a winter emergency kit in your vehicle with blankets, warm clothing, water, snacks, a flashlight, phone charger, first-aid supplies, and other essentials.

โš ๏ธ NEVER approach a downed power line. Always assume it is energized and report it to the appropriate utility or 9-1-1 if it presents an immediate danger.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ MAKE A WINTER WEATHER PLAN

Ask your family:

โ„๏ธ What will we do if school or work closes early?
โ„๏ธ Who will pick up the kids if conditions deteriorate?
โ„๏ธ What will we do if we lose power overnight?
โ„๏ธ How will we safely stay warm?
โ„๏ธ Do we have enough medications and necessities to stay home for several days?
โ„๏ธ Who should we check onโ€”especially older family members, neighbors, or others who may need assistance?

๐Ÿ“ฑ Most importantly, stay informed. Winter weather conditions can change quickly. Monitor trusted weather sources and local public safety information before and during the storm.

โ„๏ธ DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE FIRST SNOWFLAKE FALLS.

Prepare your home. Prepare your vehicle. Make a plan. Stay informed.

A winter storm is much easier to weather when you're ready before it arrives!

๐Ÿšจ **NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH: KNOW WHO TO CALL!** ๐Ÿšจ

During severe weather, emergencies, and disasters, our 9-1-1 dispatchers may experience a significant increase in calls. **Knowing who to callโ€”and whenโ€”helps keep 9-1-1 available for people facing immediate emergencies.**

๐Ÿ†˜ **CALL 9-1-1 FOR EMERGENCIES**

Call **9-1-1** when there is an immediate threat to **life, safety, or property**, including:

๐Ÿš‘ Serious injuries or life-threatening medical emergencies

๐ŸŒŠ Someone trapped in or threatened by rapidly rising floodwater
๐ŸŒณ A fallen tree striking an occupied home or vehicle or creating an immediate life-safety hazard
๐Ÿšจ A crime in progress or an immediate threat to someone's safety
๐Ÿ†˜ Any situation requiring an immediate response from law enforcement, fire, or EMS

โ›ˆ๏ธ **DURING SEVERE WEATHER OR DISASTERS**

Please **DO NOT call 9-1-1 for general information**, such as:

โ€ข When will my power be restored?
โ€ข Is a particular road open?
โ€ข Where is the storm headed?
โ€ข Was that a tornado?
โ€ข Are schools or businesses closed?
โ€ข Where can I find weather updates?

Use trusted weather alerts, utility providers, local government/public safety pages, and local news sources for this information.

โ˜Ž๏ธ **NON-EMERGENCY PUBLIC SAFETY ASSISTANCE**

For situations requiring public safety assistance that **do not involve an immediate threat to life or safety**, call:

**White County 9-1-1 Non-Emergency / Dispatch**
๐Ÿ“ž **706-865-0911**

๐Ÿ‘ฎ **WHITE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE**

For routine Sheriff's Office business, administrative matters, records-related questions, or other non-emergency Sheriff's Office needs, call:

**White County Sheriff's Office**
๐Ÿ“ž **706-865-5177**

โš ๏ธ **NOT SURE IF IT'S AN EMERGENCY?**

If you reasonably believe someone's **life, safety, or property is in immediate danger, call 9-1-1.** Don't delay an emergency call because you're worried that the situation may not be "serious enough."

๐Ÿ“Œ **SAVE THESE NUMBERS:**

๐Ÿšจ **EMERGENCY โ€” 9-1-1**
โ˜Ž๏ธ **NON-EMERGENCY / DISPATCH โ€” 706-865-0911**
๐Ÿ‘ฎ **WHITE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE โ€” 706-865-5177**

**Knowing who to call is part of being prepared. Help us keep 9-1-1 available for emergencies when every second counts!**

Community Helpers at Mt. Yonah Elementary! ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿพ

The White County Sheriff's Office enjoyed partnering with Mt. Yonah Elementary School for their Community Helpers event, helping Pre-K and Kindergarten students learn what our K9 Deputy and their School Resource Officer, Deputy Ramey, do every day to keep them and our community safe โ€” with a little help from Champ!

From patrol car tours to trying on real gear, our little learners asked great questions and made some new friends. Thank you to the teachers, staff, and students of Mt. Yonah for having us!

๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐ŸŒ€ NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH: BE READY FOR TROPICAL CYCLONES & FLOODING

You don't have to live on the coast to be affected by a tropical cyclone. White County, GA can experience dangerous rainfall, flash flooding, strong winds, downed trees, power outages, and hazardous road conditions from tropical systems moving inland.

๐ŸŒง๏ธ BE READY FOR HEAVY RAIN & FLOODING
Even areas that have never flooded before can experience flooding after several inches of rain.

โœ… Know whether your home, workplace, or regular travel routes are in a flood-prone area.
โœ… Never drive through a flooded roadway. Turn Around, Don't Drown!
โœ… Remember that water can hide washed-out roads, debris, and damaged bridges.
โœ… Be especially cautious near creeks, rivers, low-water crossings, and areas with poor drainage.
โœ… Move vehicles, outdoor equipment, and other valuables to higher ground when flooding is expected.
โœ… If you live in a flood-prone area, know where you will go before water begins rising.

๐ŸŒ€ PREPARE FOR A TROPICAL SYSTEM
Before the storm arrives:

๐Ÿ”‹ Charge phones, battery packs, and other essential devices.
๐Ÿ’ก Have flashlights, extra batteries, and emergency supplies ready.
๐Ÿฅซ Keep enough food and water on hand for several days.
๐ŸŒณ Secure or bring inside outdoor furniture, decorations, grills, and other loose items.
๐Ÿ  Check gutters and drainage areas and clear debris when it is safe to do so.
๐Ÿ“ป Have multiple ways to receive weather and emergency alerts.
๐Ÿ“‹ Review your family's emergency plan and make sure everyone knows where to go and who to contact.

โš ๏ธ WHEN FLOODING IS HAPPENING
If a Flash Flood Warning is issued for your area, act immediately. Don't wait for the water to rise around your home or vehicle.

๐Ÿš— NEVER attempt to cross a flooded road. Just 12 inches of moving water can sweep away a small vehicle, and deeper water can carry larger vehicles away.

๐ŸŒŠ Remember: Turn Around, Don't Drown!

For White County families, preparedness isn't just about hurricanes at the coast. Tropical weather can travel hundreds of miles inland and bring dangerous conditions right here at home.

๐ŸŒ€ Know the threat. Make a plan. Stay informed. Be prepared.
