When community members come together to stand up for what is right, there is a collective power that makes change possible. 💗

⚠ Civil rights are under attack in University Heights — and we're asking you to show up to defend the fair housing rights of residents.

University Heights City Council has called an emergency meeting for TONIGHT, Monday, October 19, at 7:00 p.m. to vote on removing Section 8 / Housing Choice Vouchers from the source-of-income definition in the city's fair housing ordinance.

If the measure passes, landlords in University Heights will be free to turn away tenants simply because they pay rent with a voucher.

The people with the most at stake are low-income families, seniors, and residents with disabilities who rely on vouchers to find housing. This is the second attempt to strike the provision from the books.

Please show your support for civil rights. Join us tonight at 7:00 p.m. to call upon City Council to maintain existing protections.

Federal and state laws generally prohibit housing providers from inquiring about protected characteristics — like race, religion, s*x, familial status, national origin, ancestry, military status, or disability — and using that information to treat you differently in housing decisions.

An out-of-town investment firm bought 153 Cleveland homes and now holds a local real estate portfolio riddled with vacancy, code violation notices and maintenance complaints from tenants.

79% of the homes appeared to be vacant, according to a study authored by the community organizing group ACORN and the Vacant and Abandoned Property Action Council (VAPAC).

The study called for the city to bring a public nuisance lawsuit against the Maryland-based company, Riparian Capital Partners. Cleveland helped with research for the study.

Due to current gaps in funding, we remain unable to provide individual assistance with fair housing complaints and inquiries in the communities of Brecksville, East Cleveland, Elyria, Hunting Valley, and Lorain at this time.
