Beyond the runways at Burke: A lakefront recycling yard turns river sludge into topsoil 06/15/2026

🚢 Did you know the Cuyahoga River is dredged twice a year to keep commercial shipping moving?

It's one of those behind-the-scenes operations most people never see—but it's essential to keeping Northeast Ohio connected to the world.

That's why we're grateful to Michelle Jarboe and News 5 Cleveland for going Beyond the Runway and taking viewers inside the Port of Cleveland's Confined Disposal Facility to tell this important story.

Beyond the runways at Burke: A lakefront recycling yard turns river sludge into topsoil The Port of Cleveland says an unusual lakefront recycling hub, which would be tough to move and costly to rebuild, needs to stay put — even with the future of Burke Lakefront Airport up in the air.
