It was a pleasure to represent Slovenia at the 2026 Chicago International Gala, organized by World Business Chicago and Chicago Sister Cities International.

Events like this are a valuable opportunity to connect with fellow members of the diplomatic community and celebrate the partnerships that bring countries, people, and ideas closer together. Chicago’s international spirit, reflected in its vast Consular Corps, representing 80 countries, makes it a truly global city. 🤝🏙️

A Message of Hope and Peace, Woven Through Lace

We are excited to share the journey ofBird of Hope for Peace, an extraordinary work by Slovenian artist Eva Petrič, bringing a message of hope, peace, and connection across borders.

✨ On display in Milwaukee from October through November, the artwork will continue its Midwest journey to Cleveland in December!

Bringing together lace pieces that have travelled from across the world, Eva has woven them into a remarkable work of art in Idrija, Slovenia — the historic home of Slovenia’s renowned bobbin lace-making tradition.

🇸🇮 Through this unique creation, Slovenian cultural heritage meets a universal message: that even the smallest threads can connect people, cultures, and continents, weaving together a shared hope for peace.

Slovenian lace art by Eva Petric in Milwaukee. More ⤵️

🐦The Slovenian Arts Program is excited to host a Welcome Celebration that will recognize the arrival in Milwaukee of Bird of Hope for Peace, a work of art by the Slovenian artist, Eva Petrič!

You're invited! Please join us on October 8th at Milwaukee City Hall at 2:00pm in the rotunda!

The artwork is a bird woven from one thousand lace roses, handcrafted by lacemakers from eleven countries, who responded to an open call initiated by the artist Eva Petrič in collaboration with the Idrija Lace School and the Idrija Tourist Board in a shared spirit of hope. Donated to the artist during the Idrija Lace Festival 2024, the roses were transformed by Petrič into a collective artwork.
The presentation of this artwork in Milwaukee is courtesy of the Milwaukee Slovenian Arts Council in conjunction with the Ermenc Fund of the UWM Foundation, and through a generous grant from the International Institute of Wisconsin.

Our special guests are the Hon. Suzana Češarek, Slovenian Consulate General in Cleveland, and Dr. Paul Trebian, CEO of the International Institute of Wisconsin.

We're so grateful to the grant from the International Institute of Wisconsin, the continuous support from the Ermenc Slovenian Arts Fund at the UWM Foundation. We also received additional funds from the Ministrstvo za kulturo - Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia - & Ministrstvo za zunanje in evropske zadeve RS / Slovenian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. All have made this beautiful and unique exhibit possible.

Welcome to Ljubljana, Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik! Ohio and Slovenia go way back: Cleveland is home to the largest Slovenian community outside Slovenia, and Cleveland and Ljubljana have been sister cities for 50 years. Now we're looking to the stars together. Director Mihalik met with Slovenia's Minister of Economy, Labor, and Sport and space industry leaders to explore new partnerships between U.S. and Slovenian companies. From the home of John Glenn and Neil Armstrong to the homeland of space pioneer Herman Potočnik Noordung, this partnership is ready for liftoff!

Today, September 22, the Diocese of Duluth will celebrate the Opening Mass of the Cause of Canonization of Monsignor Joseph Buh, a Slovenian-born missionary priest who dedicated his life to serving communities in northern Minnesota.

Born in Zadobje, Slovenia in 1833, Monsignor Buh came to the United States in 1864.
He served Native American communities, immigrants and settlers, and played an important role in the early Slovenian community in Minnesota.
His life and work remain a meaningful part of both Minnesota’s history and the story of Slovenians in the United States.

The opening of a cause for canonization marks the beginning of a formal process in which the Church examines a person's life, virtues and reputation for holiness.
It is the first step in a process that may, over time, lead to beatification and canonization.
