Once in a Blue Moon 🔵

While the Blue Moon that you'll be able to spot in the night sky this Sunday, May 31, won’t actually appear the color blue, it will still be a rare sight! This name refers to a second full Moon visible in a single calendar month.

New material, who dis? 🌕🔥

Researchers recently discovered and tested a new heat-resistant material at NASA Glenn. It could help NASA melt Moon rocks to extract resources — like metals for building infrastructure and oxygen for fuel and life support systems.

If astronauts can “live off the land” on the Moon, they may be able to pack lighter for future missions. More: https://go.nasa.gov/3PDCega

NASA Glenn's Steve Logan, Quentin Schwinn, and Jordan Cochran won a 2025 NASA Videographer of the Year award! 🏆

This video earned second place in the "Production" category and takes the viewer inside testing of the Orion spacecraft that flew around the Moon during NASA Artemis I at our Neil Armstrong Test Facility in Sandusky, Ohio.

"I absolutely loved supporting the testing of Orion," Cochran said. "The prep, build-up, and testing took over a year."

“It was the longest and most complex testing I have ever seen, and then to see the forward bay cover get jettisoned was such a thrill," Schwinn added.

“Most will remember the launch, but I will always remember telling the story of the NASA Glenn engineers behind our next steps beyond Earth,” Logan said.

Another 2025 NASA Videographer of the Year award for our center's Jordan Cochran! 👏

This time-lapse video earned second place in the "Time Warp" category and shows a battery-powered engine being tested at a simulated altitude of 27,500 feet inside NASA’s Electric Aircraft Testbed (NEAT) facility in Sandusky, Ohio.

“I’m thrilled to receive second place for this time‑lapse,” Cochran said. “I challenged myself with trying new camera angles and more advanced editing work, and I love how it turned out.”

Go behind the scenes with Taylor Pember, an electronics engineer at NASA Glenn!

She helps test communications systems for future missions to the Moon.

Come along for the ride as she drives a mockup lunar rover, takes us inside a special, spiky chamber and a new satellite dish station, and shows off her recent out-of-this-world meteorite discovery. 👀

Welcome to the jungle 🛠️

Take a peek inside the regenerative fuel cell system our researchers are preparing to test over the next few months. Nestled inside are nearly 270 sensors and 1,000 components!

This technology operates like a rechargeable battery and could revolutionize the way NASA stores energy during future NASA Artemis Moon missions — potentially powering habitats, rovers, and other essential systems.

Congratulations to Glenn’s Jordan Cochran for receiving a 2025 NASA Videographer of the Year award! 🎉

This time-lapse video earned third place in the "Time Warp" category and shows the disassembly of an S-3B Viking aircraft inside the center’s hangar and manufacturing facility.

“This project was such a great challenge,” Cochran said. “Working across multiple locations pushed me to think differently about how to tell a cohesive story through several different camera angles. I enjoyed exploring those creative choices."

As NASA heads back to the Moon and on to Mars, our gear needs to be tougher than ever. 💪

Glenn engineers invented a “cool” new way to test materials in extremely low temperatures — right here on Earth. This cutting-edge technology, known at the Lunar Environment Structural Test Rig, will help us make sure hardware can survive the harsh conditions of the lunar surface.
