Dear Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib,
On behalf of the Fraternal Order of Police Michigan, one of the oldest and largest law enforcement organizations in the state, I am writing to express our deep disappointment and concern regarding your recent vote against H.Res. 1252, a House resolution memorializing law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty.
H.Res. 1252 was introduced to formally honor and recognize the sacrifice and service of the men and women in law enforcement who gave their lives while protecting the communities they served. The House passed the resolution overwhelmingly by a vote of 418-2 — a near unanimous expression of respect and appreciation for fallen officers.
Your vote opposing this resolution, alongside only one other Member of Congress, was noticed by law enforcement professionals and their families, especially in Michigan, whose members serve courageously every day. While we understand that Members of Congress may hold differing perspectives on broader public safety policy, actions such as this send a troubling message to officers and first responders who risk their lives in service to the public.
The Fraternal Order of Police Michigan proudly supports our law enforcement community — including honoring officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice — and believes these recognitions are important for morale and for reaffirming respect for those who protect our communities. Your vote was viewed by many as dismissive of their service and the ongoing sacrifices they make day in and day out.
We respectfully urge you to reflect on the impact this vote has had on the law enforcement community and the families of fallen officers. Regardless of political differences, honoring those who gave their lives in the line of duty should remain a unifying act of respect and gratitude for their sacrifice and commitment to public safety.
Sincerely,
Michael Sauger, President
