Two crews, two assets, one mission. 🌊🚁

A Coast Guard Air Station MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and a Coast Guard Station Harbor 45-response boat medium crew conducted a joint training on yesterday.

Crews refined basket-hoisting skills and strengthened coordination between both assets to support future MEDEVAC and search and rescue operations on the 💪

Earlier this week, the crew from cutter Biscayne Bay conducted flight training with an MH-60 helicopter crew from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City. The exercise strengthened interoperability between the two assets and sharpened crew proficiency in basket hoisting, ensuring readiness for future MEDEVAC and search and rescue missions.

Manistee, Michigan, was recently designated the 38th Coast Guard City, recognizing the deep and enduring relationship between the Manistee community and the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard City designation is a special recognition of a community’s strong support for the U.S. Coast Guard and its members.

For generations, Coast Guard Station Manistee has been an important part of the community, protecting lives on while working alongside local agencies and taking part in community events, safety programs and outreach. In return, the people of Manistee have consistently welcomed Coast Guard members and their families as part of the community.

For the people who serve, it represents a that welcomes, supports and appreciates the Coast Guard and its families. For the city, it is a lasting recognition of its connection to the Coast Guard and the rich maritime heritage of the area.

The Coast Guard participated in a passenger vessel fire and mass rescue exercise in Chicago yesterday.

Hosted by the Great Lakes Marine Firefighting Task Force(GLMFF-TF), the two-day exercise brought together the Coast Guard, Chicago Fire Dept., Chicago Police Department, passenger vessel industry partners, and regional stakeholders to strengthen coordination during complex passenger vessel incidents.

Day one featured a technical conference at the Navy Pier, while day two included a live, scenario-based exercise aboard the passenger vessel Odyssey Lake Michigan.

Responders managed a simulated machinery-space fire aboard the vessel, which is capable of carrying over 700 passengers.The scenario tested the response to a high-heat threat while addressing mass rescue operations, environmental response and vessel stability.

Exercises like this ensure responders are ready to work together when lives are at stake.

Wearing a life jacket can help you survive the unexpected.

When their catamaran capsized yesterday in Lake Michigan, three boaters held onto the side of the overturned boat, life jackets securely fastened.

After Berrien County Sheriff's Office drone operators spotted the capsized vessel, a Coast Guard Station St. Joseph boat crew arrived on scene and swiftly rescued all three people.

"This rapid rescue highlights both the value of local agency partnerships and the lifesaving impact of proper safety gear. The Coast Guard urges every boater across the Great Lakes to prioritize safety by always wearing your life jacket, monitoring local weather conditions, and carrying reliable means of communication.” - CDR Aaron Dorrian, search and rescue mission coordinator, Sector Lake Michigan

Earlier today, the U.S. Coast Guard presented the Meritorious Public Service Award to the Michigan State Police Special Operations Division Marine Services Team for their outstanding support to the Coast Guard during the 2025–2026 ice season and throughout the past decade.

On April 14, 2026, the MSP Marine Services Team responded within 72 hours to assist the Coast Guard following critical electronic casualties aboard U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Neah Bay (WTGB 105) and Coast Guard Cutter Katmai Bay (WTGB 101). The team conducted two complex dives to replace damaged fathometers, helping return both cutters to operational readiness.

Their support was especially critical during a challenging ice season, helping enable Coast Guard icebreaking operations that supported the movement of commercial vessels, billions of dollars in cargo, and life-saving missions across the .

The thanks the Marine Services Team for their professionalism, expertise and continued partnership. Their service has made a lasting impact on Coast Guard operations throughout the Great Lakes.

The Coast Guard teamed up with the Michigan State Police and other partner agencies yesterday to rescue Craig Berg, 70, who went missing hiking in Isle Royale National Park on Sept. 5.

With help from good Samaritan backpackers, Michigan State Police troopers and K-9 units located Berg on Isle Royale, reportedly injured and hypothermic.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City hoisted and brought him to Marquette Regional Airport, where EMS personnel transported him to a local hospital for higher medical care.

Every step is a salute 🫡🇺🇸

Coast Guard members assigned to the Great Lakes District joined local first responders this morning for the annual 9/11 Stair Climb, hosted by the Navy SEAL Foundation at Progressive Field in Cleveland.

Participants climbed 110 flights of stairs, symbolizing the height of the World Trade Center towers and honoring the 2,977 lives lost 25 years ago.

During the response to 9/11, the Coast Guard led the largest maritime evacuation in American history, assisting more than 500,000 people stranded in Manhattan.

We honor the fallen, remember the heroes and remain grateful for the first responders who answered the call that day, as well as those who continue to serve today.

Illegal charters put everyone at risk. If you're planning a boat trip, here are some tips to keep you safe:

• Ask to see the captain's Coast Guard credential first. Licensed captains carry a Merchant Mariner Credential, which can either be the classic red passport-style booklet or a one-page synthetic paper certificate. If an operator cannot provide credentials, explain the charter arrangement, or answer basic safety questions, reconsider the trip.

• Choose safety over convenience. An unusually low price or easier booking option should never come at the expense of passenger well-being.

• Know the warning signs.
Passengers should be cautious if required safety equipment is missing, inaccessible, or not clearly explained before departure. Do not board a vessel that appears unsafe or illegal.

• Report any safety concerns to the authorities. If there is an immediate emergency on the water, call 911 or contact the Coast Guard on VHF-FM channel 16. You can also report suspected illegal passenger vessel operations using the CGIS Tips app.

Always verify before booking so you and your loved ones stay sate on the water!
