Pine Tree Vistas Tenant Spotlight: Meet James!
For James, finding an accessible apartment wasn't easy. After years of living with a mobility disability, he knew exactly what he needed in a home. Unfortunately, finding one that actually met those needs was another story.
As James explained, putting grab bars in a bathroom doesn't automatically make it accessible. Accessibility is about so much more.
It's having enough room to maneuver an electric wheelchair around countertops and appliances. It's being able to turn around in the bathroom instead of backing out. It's having a kitchen you can actually use and a roll-in shower that doesn't require maneuvering over the side of a bathtub.
James has lived at MaxHousing's Pine Tree Vistas in Parma since 2022. After initially moving into a one-bedroom apartment, he transferred to a two-bedroom unit that better accommodates his mobility equipment and gives his family room to spend time together.
And family time is a big deal in James's home!
An avid gamer, James loves playing RPG video games and watching anime with his teenage sons. Their living room is set up with multiple televisions and gaming consoles so they can play together, something James especially treasures.
He also appreciates being close to grocery stores, public transportation, and places he can visit with his boys. These everyday conveniences give him more opportunities to get out, spend time with family, and maintain his independence.
James has plenty of ideas about how accessible housing could be improved, too. He believes accessibility should be incorporated into every new apartment, not treated as a feature reserved for a small percentage of homes.
After all, anyone can experience an injury, develop a disability, or need additional support as they age.
James's story is a reminder that accessible housing isn't just about getting through the front door. It's about having the space, freedom, and opportunity to live your life.
At MaxHousing, we're proud to provide homes designed with independence in mind. Thank you James for sharing your experience with us.
