CATCH THE FALL MIGRATION
Who is Passing Through? Update from Julie West, Honorary Life Trustee & Resident Bird Expert

Fall migration along with our bird banding program, continues through the end of October. So far this year, we have seen a few notable birds.

🪶 Our first Pileated Woodpecker was banded.
🌳 We banded our fourth American Woodcock - a type of shorebird. Unlike many shorebirds who are found near the shore, these Woodcocks typically inhabit damp areas with dense cover in woods. This past spring we saw the Woodcock multiple times on the marsh side of the All Peoples' Trail, under the willow trees.

Speaking of spring...

⭐ 56 unique bird species banded, which is just above our average of 55.
⭐ 327 total birds banded, slightly above our average of 302.
🥳 EXCITING MOMENT: our first catch of a Blue-winged x Golden-winged Warbler Hybrid since we began banding 25 years ago! These two species hybridize regularly and hybrids can also cross breed. Since banding began, we have seen a total of 13 Blue-winged and 1 Golden-winged warbler, but never a hybrid. We only are able to catch them when they are migrating through the Nature Center.

Other notable moments:
🩵 We banded our second and third Barn Swallows.
💙 Our third Eastern Kingbird.
🩵 Our ninth Solitary Sandpiper.

It is always exciting to interact with these more rare birds!

FALL BIRD BANDING
Monday, Wednesday, & Friday | Through October 30

Meet Julie West at the table near the right side of the driveway to observe migratory birds as they are banded. Generally, the timing is from 30 minutes after sunrise to 12PM. Weather permitting. Free. All ages and abilities welcome to observe and learn.

This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor Indigenous peoples, cultures, and enduring connections to the land, including the 20 acres of Shaker Parklands we steward.

Thousands of years before European settlers arrived in what we now know as Cuyahoga County and the Shaker Parklands, Indigenous peoples and cultures called this region home. The area’s forests, hills, marshes, and waterways sustained generations of people, including Paleoindian hunters, Hopewell peoples, and communities associated with Whittlesey culture, as well as Indigenous nations such as the Seneca and Ojibwe.

This land is also part of the traditional homelands of numerous Indigenous nations, including the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Lenape, Shawnee, Wyandot, Miami, Ottawa, Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and other Great Lakes peoples. Today, Northeast Ohio remains home to Indigenous people representing many tribal nations whose cultures, knowledge, and connections to the land continue to thrive.

As a nature center dedicated to conservation, education, and connecting people with the natural world, we recognize that environmental stewardship begins with understanding the land’s history and honoring the people who have cared for it across generations.
