Mr. Doan and Mr. Clement brought Midlakes High students to the Salmon River Fish Hatchery. The Coho and Chinook salmon were completing their roughly three-year life cycle, returning the creek waters they imprinted on when leaving the hatchery.
The hatchery was opened in 1980 and is the largest of the 12 hatcheries in New York. The hatchery will collect eggs, fertilize and then incubate the eggs into fingerlings before they are released in the area waterways. The students learned about the preservation efforts at Salmon River. Both native Atlantic and non-native Pacific species are grown for release in an effort to sustain the population while keeping a balance between large apex fish and prey fish. This benefits the anglers, the population and the ecosystems. π£ππ£
The process of the 'zombie fish' returning to the hatchery includes a 13-mile up-stream swim where they leave Lake Ontario and press forward for a week without eating to reach their native waters.
