π Nobody prepares you for the moment someone you love is diagnosed with dementia.
Suddenly, you're faced with questions you never thought you'd have to ask, decisions you never imagined making, and emotions you don't always know how to handle.
If you're beginning this journey, here are a few things I wish every family knew:
π Dementia is more than memory loss. It can affect communication, behavior, judgment, and daily activities.
π Behaviors are often a form of communication. Look beyond the behavior to understand what your loved one may need.
π You don't always need to correct them. Sometimes reassurance matters more than being right.
π Routines can bring comfort and reduce confusion.
π Your loved one is still a person with feelings, preferences, and a need for connection.
π You cannot do everything alone. Asking for help is part of good caregiving.
π Some days will be harder than others, and that's okay.
π Taking care of yourself is just as important as caring for your loved one.
π Learning about dementia can help you feel more prepared and less overwhelmed.
β¨ Most importantly, you don't have to figure everything out at once.
