I had a great opportunity today at Westbrook High School, to get a firsthand look at a program that’s helping connect students with future careers in manufacturing and beyond.
The tour was organized by the CBIA and brought together area manufacturers to see what students are learning and how these skills can translate into actual jobs.
It was great to see the robotics program in action, including projects designed for land, air and sea, along with the school’s fabrication and metalworking shop. These are hands-on skills that include computer coding, welding, metal work, and soldering, along with one of the most fundamental lessons: problem solving.
What really stands out is the connection this program creates between education and the workforce. Students can begin exploring their interests in middle and high school, develop practical skills, and build a pathway toward careers with manufacturers right here in our region who are looking for qualified employees.
Connecting our schools with local industry is a win-win. Students gain valuable experience and a clearer picture of their career options, while employers have an opportunity to help develop the next generation of skilled workers.
Programs like this are a great example of how we can better prepare students for success while strengthening Connecticut’s manufacturing industry and our local economy. Great work by Westbrook High School, its teachers, CBIA and the area manufacturers helping make these opportunities possible!
