Prayers for everyone 🙏🙏🙏

We are heartbroken to share that Firefighter Andrew Brokes died in the line of duty this morning while searching for victims inside the building at 410 Marly Drive.

Firefighter Brokes, who joined the Durham Fire Department on May 5, 2025, served the Durham community with dedication, courage, and a deep commitment to the residents of the Bull City.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for our department, the family, and the entire community,” said Durham Fire Chief Robert J. Zoldos II. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and his colleagues, and we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during this unimaginably difficult time. The department is standing with and supporting his family in every possible way.”

Two other firefighters were injured during the incident and were taken to Duke Medical Center. Both have received care and are expected to make full recoveries.

This loss is felt across our entire department. Firefighters step into unpredictable situations every day in service to others, and Firefighter Brokes embodied that calling with honor.

We know our community is grieving alongside us. If you wish to share your condolences or messages of support, they will be received with gratitude by our department and by those who knew and loved Firefighter Brokes.

In the coming days, we will share more information about how we will honor his service and support the firefighters involved in this incident.

Thank you, Durham, for surrounding our DFD family with care during this profoundly difficult time.

Every great idea starts with someone asking, "How can we make our community safer?"

Our firefighters answered that question through Community Risk Reduction projects focused on education, prevention, and solving local challenges. Some projects reached many residents, while others equipped our crews with new resources or addressed risks before they became emergencies.

Over the next several weeks, we'll be introducing each project and the firefighters behind it. Join us in celebrating their commitment to making New Hanover County a safer place to live, work, and visit.

Tyler's project reminded residents that keeping fire hydrants clear and accessible can make a critical difference when firefighters need them most.

💧 370 Gallons. That’s Why.

When you’re fighting fire in a rural community, every gallon matters.

Northern Wake Fire Department recently transitioned to 4-inch supply hose, and last night B Shift and our volunteer firefighters trained on the new hose system.

Here’s the simple math:

âś… 1,000 feet of 5-inch hose holds approximately 1,020 gallons of water
âś… 1,000 feet of 4-inch hose holds approximately 650 gallons of water
✅ That’s nearly 370 additional gallons available for firefighting operations instead of sitting inside the hose

We recognize that 5-inch hose is capable of moving a greater volume of water.

However, our analysis of past incidents has shown that when we transition into a large-scale water supply operation involving drop tanks and tanker shuttles, we have often reached a point where the fire has already gained a significant advantage.

Our goal is to put more usable water on the fire sooner.

By reducing the amount of water stored in the hose itself, we can maximize the water immediately available for fire attack during those critical first minutes. Those early moments are often when firefighters have the greatest opportunity to stop fire spread, reclaim transitional space, and improve the chances of saving the structure.

The change to 4-inch supply hose is one part of a larger strategy focused on:

đźš’ Faster fire attack
đź’§ More immediately available water
⏱️ Improved water delivery during the most critical phase of the incident
🏠 Better outcomes for the citizens and businesses we serve

Training together and continuously evaluating our operations helps ensure we are prepared to meet the challenges of a growing community.

Train hard. Train together. Be ready.
