Clinton Fire Department’s Blake West participated in a unique training today called, “Project SAFER, Spectrum Responder Training,”hosted by the Macon County Emergency Management, a division of the Macon County Sheriff’s Department.

This training was designed to teach emergency responders how to recognize, react and manage situations involving people with autism. Blake’s excited to bring back ideas to assist in department guidelines on appropriately managing autism emergencies.

Pictured with Blake is Blue Line Spectrum Safety instructor, Stefan Bjes. Thank You to Tammy Schneider and Richland Community College for hosting this free event.

Fire Prevention Week is this coming week. Like in the past, firefighters will be investing tons of time this week talking to families on how to be fire safe. Every year the investment from firefighters increase on spreading the messages on prevention of fires.

We have scheduled to speak to 1,200 kids in the next 10 days. Firefighters will discuss, how to and when not to dial 911, safe home procedures, why not to play with fire, checking you’re smoke alarms and how to be a better neighbor and friend to others.

It’s been several years since the City of Clinton has had a fatal fire. We continue to see an increase in working smoke detectors when we respond to these incidents. We praise you all and credit our fire prevention efforts to these experiences.

Attached is a coloring page your kids will take home after visiting with a firefighter. On the bottom of the page is a questionnaire that we hope to get back. When it’s identified that a smoke detector is needed, the fire department will reach out providing you a brand new working detector for FREE, paid by a approved program / grant the fire department has received from the Illinois Fire Service Alliance.

Also your child will soon be taking home a high visible orange grab bag that could be used to trick or treat with, a fire hat donated by Peterson Insurance Company and some cool shades, water bottle and ruler that all have educational quotes on them.

And as always, the fire station is always open. Feel free to stop by and visit, check out the station and trucks anytime throughout the year!

Today is a monumental moment at the City of Clinton Fire Department. The fire department has always been staffed by a full time firefighter. For the last 50 plus years the city has employed 3 full time firefighter / engineers that work a 24 hour on, 48 hours off shift.

Today marks the day of growth at the fire department as we announce the 4th full time employee, Justin Dallas. Justin is no stranger to the fire service, especially Clinton. Justin has served the Clinton fire department for several years as a part time firefighter / EMT paramedic. Justin grew up around the Clinton fire station being his father David is also another full time employee.

The new hire will work the “power shift.” The power shift is 7 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday when we find volunteer / part time employment at it lowest. This addition will be tremendous to the daytime response ultimately saving lives in the City of Clinton.

Our firefighters Nick, Stanton and Johnny participated in the 9/11 stair climb challenge today in Decatur. Spreading the awareness and never forgetting. Extra special, in 2001 Stanton and Johnny were not even born yet. Knowing where you are and acknowledging and learning where you came from, good job men!

Where were you on September 11th 2001?

Weeks before 9/11 firefighter Peter Brennan from FDNY was visiting family in the Clinton area and did what most firefighters do, stopped by the local fire house. Peter stayed for a while sharing stories with Clinton Engineer Ron Ziegler developing a friendship with Ron.

The day of September 11th, firefighters in Clinton soon learned that among those heroes in the pile of rubble was Peter. A husband, new father and friend of the Clinton Firefighter. Clinton Firefighters hit the streets fundraising for 9/11 recovery efforts. Firefighters gathered eye wear, gloves and a large monetary donation and headed for New York City.

Commissioner Dan Ballenger and Assistant Chiefs Earl Jiles and Kenny Huerman departed Clinton and headed to New York. Meeting Peter Brennan’s wife and presenting her a check to help her with expenses during the horrific time. Clinton firefighters then went to the fire station of Rescue 4 to present the equipment. While there, was asked to ride along with Rescue 4 and answered some calls with them.

Unfortunately, we all have our memories of where we were, what we were doing and how we felt. We all remember the feelings that rushed through us. Scared, angry, nervous, confused, sad, a million of emotions running through every American body thinking of the events of that day. One thing is certain, we were all united.

Where were you on September 11th 2001? We will never forget.

What a wonderful night! Thank you to the Clinton High School Athletic Department and Cross Country Team for organizing such a wonderful event for our community. We were told just under 800 runners ran this event in three different heats. Thank you to those fire departments that attended along with us and helped “Light the Night!”

This is Annie, Annie and her human mom stop by the fire station everyday for a drink on their morning walk. We’ve gotten to know Annie and look forward to her daily tail wag and belly rub. It’s a beautiful day, if you too decide to take your pup for a walk, ensure you put the fire department doggy water bowl on your route!
