Our office would like to wish everyone a very safe and Happy Halloween!

Tips to remember when trick or treating to keep the evening full of treats - not tricks:

👻 Plan your route
🎃 Wear reflective clothing or use a flashlight
👻 Stay street smart
🎃 Stay connected and pay attention to your surroundings
👻 Check the candy before giving to your child

We hope as all the superheroes, ghost, goblins and monsters fill the streets in Anderson County, that you all have the best Halloween.

Public Information Officer Brandy Neal and I had a blast at the Clinton Trunk or Treat. What a great event! It was good to have some crime fighting help from Batman and some young officers in training.

I do owe an apology to the children that came through the line. While everybody got plenty of candy, not many got a Twizzler. It turns out our DA has a Twizzler problem. Please don’t say anything to my doctor, Wendy May, M.D. at UT Family Physicians. I don’t need the kind of problem that would create. 😁

Our hearts are broken at the untimely passing of our friend and colleague. Berto went through two years of training and preparation before beginning his work here with vulnerable witnesses and victims. He made it possible for traumatized persons to participate in the criminal justice process in ways they couldn't without him. He distributed non-judgmental love and support to so many Anderson Countians in their darkest moments. Defendants in cases Berto worked on received hundreds of years of prison time over his four years of service. In this way, Berto not only helped victims, but also helped make Anderson County safer from repeat offenders. Our office, crime victims and our community will miss Berto.

We wish to thank Canine Companions for providing such a loving and valued member of our team and are further grateful for their generous financial support of his veterinary care in his illness. We are also grateful to the veterinary experts who provided compassionate care to Berto through his illness.

Most particularly, we mourn not only for Berto but for his handler and our colleague Katherine Sellers and her family. Handlers and their K-9's necessarily form special bonds. Katherine and Berto were a very close and special team in their work for others.

We stand with survivors, honor those we have lost and support everyone whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer.

This month, we encourage everyone to prioritize their health, schedule recommended screenings and remind the people we love to do the same. Early detection can make a difference.

Together, we can spread awareness, offer support, and continue the fight.

Awareness. Early Detection. Hope. 💟

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, honor survivors and remember those whose lives have been lost.

Domestic violence can affect individuals and families of all kinds. Be sure to listen without judgment, offer encouragement, and connect those in need with available resources so that a meaningful difference can be made.

Our office stands with survivors and remains committed to supporting efforts to pursue justice with compassion. Let's continue to raise awareness, break the silence and remind survivors that they are not alone. 💜

Today, on September 11th, we pause to remember and honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and the families, friends, and communities forever changed by that day.

We also remember and encourage the selflessness of the first responders, law enforcement personnel, firefighters and others who stepped forward to help in a time of unimaginable uncertainty.

Let us continue to honor their memory through compassion, service and commitment to standing together.

We will always remember. We will always honor. We will never forget.
