Subject: Fatal industrial accident, 700 block of Curry Road 7

CURRY COUNTY, NM – On Friday, September 25th at approximately 10:29 AM, Curry County Sheriff’s Deputies, along with the Clovis Fire Department, were dispatched to the 700 Block of Curry Road 7 due to an industrial accident. An employee of Farmer’s Electric Cooperative reportedly came into contact with electricity while attempting to repair a utility pole that had leaned out of place after recent heavy rain.

When crews arrived, the Clovis Fire Department rescued the employee from several feet of standing water and began rendering first aid. Deputies identified the employee, a lineman, as Mr. Ian Massey of Clovis, NM. Deputies learned that the utility pole unexpectedly fell into the standing water that Mr. Massey had been working in, causing Mr. Massey to come into contact with electricity.

Mr. Massey was transported by ambulance to the Plains Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to the injuries sustained during the accident. This incident remains under investigation.

The Curry County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and coworkers of Mr. Ian Massey. We are profoundly saddened by the loss of a dedicated lineman who tragically lost his life while working diligently in the line of duty to serve and maintain power to our community.
