The Schoharie County Democratic Committee has chosen Greg Bucking as its new chair. Bucking, who served as the vice chair and communications chair, takes over from Theresa Heary, who has led the committee for the past six years.
The two have worked closely on the main issues that the SCDC has faced in recent years, including shepherding in a new Democratic Commissioner on the Schoharie County Board of Elections, working with their counterparts in the NY21 Congressional District to choose a special election candidate for the since-cancelled special election to replace Elise Stefanik, and coordinating with state and local candidates on social media. They have engaged with the community and with local and regional media on various issues ranging from endorsements and ballot drop boxes to redistricting.
Bucking also served as the committee’s point person on opposition to the proposed Constitution Pipeline and he has been the primary author of the committee’s press releases and policy statements over the past number of years.
Bucking stated, “Theresa has been a tireless, forward-looking leader of our committee. I want to thank her for all of her energy, intelligence, and hard work, and for always moving our committee in the direction of progress.”
Heary, who supported Bucking’s bid for chair, will remain a member of the committee and plans to continue working with it while stepping back from day-to-day leadership. She said she is pleased to be handing the chairmanship to someone with whom she has worked closely and who already knows the committee, its members, and the issues the committee has been working on.
“I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has worked alongside me over the last six years,” Heary said. “Greg and I have worked together through some complicated years, and I am very happy to be leaving the committee in his hands.”
“We have a dedicated group of members on our committee who organize people and events, knock on doors, and do the tedious, behind the scenes work that is crucial to engaging the community and communicating our values,” Bucking said. The committee’s immediate focus is on getting out the vote for the November elections and electing Democratic candidates up and down the ballot. “This administration and its enablers have taken an axe to our healthcare, our purchasing power, our constitutional freedoms of speech and the press, and our right to control our bodies, and made countless other assaults on our society and on basic decency. We are going to do what we can to push back and arrive on the other side of this mess in a better place.”
