THANK YOU, MACAPA

Good morning from Florida,

Continuing on the whirlwind tour of cities, friends, and events in Brazil…arriving in Macapa around 3 in the afternoon…I’ve been coming here for about 7 years, always supporting my BFF Danielle and her amazing Leva Ciencia Group. Every new city was a total new adventure but eerily similar. I’ve known many of the kids all these years and have seen them growing up, the connection is so special, even though it has been a year, it was like it was a few minutes …things are happening so fast…every day is crazy busy, nonstop exciting, always surrounding by very kind, caring, giving friends and amazing kids…

Danielle always has many events prepared as well as time with the Army who supports Leva Ciencia. I was in Macapa for 3 days which included a trip to the Amazon…about a 3-hour flight…while in the Amazon, we visited an Army base, went for a boat trip to see the rapids, toured the military base, were treated so kindly by everyone involved…it was supposed to be a helicopter flight but was changed to a single engine plane…

We have to stay positive and always be thankful
remembering to do our best, enjoy everything we do, believe in ourselves, and let those we care about most know (I always say this, we all need to take it to heart) …hugs and smiles …STAY SAFE, TAKE CARE, Love ya, Gabe

IN NEW YORK CITY FOR 9/11 MEMORIAL

Hi all,

Good morning from the plane between Orlando and Atlanta, then to New York City for the 9/11 memorial honoring my brother and all of those in the World Tade Center Attacks twenty five years ago…I will meet with many of my cousins to share time and enjoy being with each other…for me, my brother will be with me, he always is…it is a wonderful opportunity and anytime we get an opportunity to spend time with those we care about most, we should do it.

Every year I publish an article I wrote about 6 months after 9/11/2001. Please feel free to use this any way you choose.

Hi, my name is Gabe, George Gabrielle......my brother Richard Gabrielle was lost in the attack on the World Trade Center.

Rich worked for AON Corporation, on the 103rd floor of the South Tower. We were able to trace his steps from the time the North Tower was hit until he went down with the South Tower. We know that he was with a group of about 200 people waiting for an express elevator on the 78th floor when the plane struck the South Tower. That the building rocked back & forth, a deafening explosion occurred, walls and ceilings crumbled into a foot of debris on the floor, the air turned black, and flames shot out the elevator shafts. Most people died instantly, some had serious injuries as was the case with my brother. We know the force of the explosion sent people flying through the air and my brother was thrown against a wall, suffered two broken legs, and was pinned under a large marble slab that had been on the wall. We know people tried to help him but couldn't.....he was in too much pain and others, who were also injured, were trying to get out. We found this out from one of the 12 people who survived from the 78th floor.
We were faced with this thought of him lying there by himself, in severe pain, knowing he had a terrible fear of dying in a fire, and it was very difficult to imagine. About 6 month later, tapes that had never been released surfaced...”Lost Voices of Firefighters.” In them we learned firefighters had actually reached the 78th floor, mentioned him by name, he was still alive, and were with him when the tower collapsed. This was such a huge relief, to know that he probably thought he would be OK and at least did not die by himself.
There is so much more to this story that I could add.....I had plane tickets for the 13th to fly to NY to spend 4 days with my Rich...when I finally was able to get a flight to NY, what it was like to go to trauma centers with thousands of people mourning and looking for loved ones, of people walking around with pictures looking for anyone who may have seen a missing relative, of being in NYC in an eerie stillness filled with such sadness, of standing in long, long lines to give DNA samples, of my brother's memorial and the memorial for the people he worked ...of getting back to Kennedy Space Center to have my desk filled with stuffed animals and cards, of friends' kids sending me gifts & cards, of getting phone calls and only hearing people crying on the other end......this to me is the reality of 9/11........I do know that Rich was the funniest guy I ever knew. He is with me now and we laugh and joke as always. I refuse to allow myself to think of him as buried in the rubble of the World Trade Center, his remains were never found.
I know we must go forward with life and by me taking him with me he can continue to have fun and enjoy life through my eyes. I believe we carry our loved ones with us and they share our emotions.........when we are happy so are they and when we are sad, so are they. I believe the event far overshadows the individual or even collective losses, that we as a country must understand there are people out there who would do this over and over, or worse, if they could. That they will never stop trying and we must not be naive to think that this was a onetime occurrence.

hTHANK YOU FORTALEZA; ON MY WAY, MACAPA

Hi all,

I’m leaving Fortaleza after two amazing days…these pictures are from Urussanga…as the visit unfolds, I can confirm trying to see so many friends and visit so many different places is extremely challenging physically, even more mentally. I love a challenge…it is fun and the sense of accomplishment drives me to do more…anybody can do something…can you enjoy it, make it the most fun thing in the world as you are doing it…100% mental…so many hours are spent traveling, so few time at each destination…trying to cram as much as possible in a very short time…a continuous cycle of travel to airports, (often long drives); waiting in airports; all flights with connections; waiting for bags; trips to a new city, (often long drives); visiting schools…always the best part...is limited because of such short time at each destination…only one day…just one…34 times…it’s going great but extremely full days.

The time in Fortaleza was simply amazing in every way…last year I met amazing sisters, Bia and Yasmin…with their mom and dad...they are part of a rocket club of truly amazing kids. They asked me if I wanted to stay at a hotel or their home…I always enjoy spending time with families as it gives me a chance to get to know the parents and them to know me…I was only there 2 days, one day was Saturday, one of only 2 days on this entire visit that I was not traveling of at schools. The time there with the girls and them was so very special…I am shown so much kindness by so many friends…there really is no way to describe it…we had such an amazing time…visiting 2 schools on Friday after a late night flight, getting to sleep around 2am on Friday morning…despite all the crazy travel, the time at the schools was excellent although many IT issues at the first one

We have to stay positive and always be thankful
remembering to do our best, enjoy everything we do, believe in ourselves, and let those we care about most know (I always say this, we all need to take it to heart) …hugs and smiles …STAY SAFE, TAKE CARE, Love ya, Gabe

OLA BRAZIL, ON MY WAY…
Hi all,
After midnight…, trying to finish so much correspondence and finish so many loose ends before I leave in the morning to the airport…I’ll be gone 33 days…last year when I was heading to Brazil at this time I was fighting a very serious knee injury…I really could not walk but I went and it turned out amazing…each day I got a little better…it was really awesome…I’ve had that knee replaced, getting around very good, this will be a real test as the schedule is crazy full…each day is an adventure…the challenge is to enjoy them all, equally…
While Norway launched my speaking career, Brazil blasted me into so many amazing opportunities…I was going to Brazil 3 times a year and involved in so many different venues, all giving me international exposure and opening so many doors…I know this visit will be amazing because I have so many very good friends throughout the country…
I still have to pack…75% of what I take are gifts for the schools and for kids…I love giving gifts…especially if it has NASA on it…it makes the kids feel so special…
We have to stay positive and always be thankful… remembering to do our best, enjoy everything we do, believe in ourselves, and let those we care about most know (I always say this, we all need to take it to heart) …hugs and smiles …STAY SAFE, TAKE CARE, Love ya, Gabe
