October SAPR Message | Vermont National Guard

Respect. Awareness. Prevention. Accountability.

The Vermont National Guard remains committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment where every Soldier, Airman and civilian is treated with dignity and respect.

Sexual assault prevention is a year-round responsibility that begins with each of us. By promoting awareness, encouraging intervention and supporting those who come forward, we strengthen the trust and readiness of our force.

As we move through October, we remind our Vermont National Guard community that no one should have to face sexual assault or its aftermath alone. Support is available, and every individual deserves to be heard, respected and protected.

One team. One mission. A culture of respect.

For confidential assistance, contact your Sexual Assault Response Coordinator (SARC), Victim Advocate or the DoD Safe Helpline at 877-995-5247.

Major General Henry U. Harder, Jr., Adjutant General of the Vermont National Guard, opened the VT Council on World Affairs State of the World Summit with a perspective on the changing global security landscape, emerging challenges, and the role of the United States in an increasingly complex world.

"Global security and community resilience are not two different missions for us. They're the same muscle, exercised in different directions. I think that's a useful way to think about Vermont's role in the world more broadly, and it's a theme you'll hear echoed throughout today's program. From the economics of maple syrup and microchips to the diplomacy of sports and culture. Vermont is small, but we are not separate from the world. We are woven into it, one partnership, one deployment, and one relationship at a time."

Today, the Vermont National Guard gathered at Camp Johnson in Colchester to honor our nation’s prisoners of war and those who remain missing in action during a POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremony.

Maj. Gen. Henry “Hank” Harder Jr., adjutant general of the Vermont National Guard, and retired Lt. Col. Matthew J. Wignall, Vermont deputy adjutant general, provided remarks honoring the courage, sacrifice and enduring legacy of our nation’s POWs and MIAs and their families.

The ceremony was presided over by Vermont Army National Guard Chaplain Maj. Scott Gratton and State Guard Chaplain Andreas Papayiannis.

On National POW/MIA Recognition Day, we remember those who endured captivity, those who never returned home and the families who continue to carry their memory. Their sacrifice remains a solemn reminder of our commitment to account for and honor all who served.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to attend today’s ceremony and stand in support of our POW/MIA community and their families.

You Are Not Forgotten.
