SCHOOL IS BACK!

It’s that time of year again! As students head back to school, we’re asking everyone to slow down, pay attention, and remember a few important traffic laws.

SCHOOL ZONE — ALEXANDRIA PIKE

When the school zone lights are flashing, the speed limit on Alexandria Pike through the school zone is 25 MPH.

Watch for the flashing school zone lights and slow down before entering the zone. Give yourself plenty of time and expect increased pedestrian and school bus traffic.

SCHOOL BUS STOPPING LAW — NEW FOR 2026

Kentucky House Bill 7 took effect July 15, 2026, and changes the rules for stopping for school and church buses.

When a school or church bus has its red warning lights flashing and stop arm extended, drivers must stop as required by law.

Under the new law, drivers traveling in both directions on a roadway with four or more lanes must stop unless the roadway is separated by an elevated barrier or an unpaved median.

In short:

🛑 No physical barrier or unpaved median? STOP.
🛑 Two-lane road? STOP.
🛑 Four or more lanes with no barrier or unpaved median? STOP.
➡️ Four or more lanes separated by an elevated barrier or unpaved median? Traffic traveling in the opposite direction does not have to stop.

When you see a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, STOP. Stay stopped until the bus deactivates its warning signals and retracts the stop arm.

We want to make residents aware of a recent increase in reports throughout surrounding areas of the county involving unlocked vehicles being rummaged through and vehicles being stolen after keys were left inside.

At this time, these incidents are occurring in nearby communities and have not necessarily been reported within our city, but we want to encourage everyone to take proactive steps to help prevent becoming a victim.

A few simple habits can make a big difference:

• Lock your vehicle doors — even if parked in your driveway or for a short period of time.
• Remove keys and key fobs — never leave them inside an unattended vehicle.
• Take valuables with you or keep them out of sight (wallets, purses, fi****ms, electronics, cash, garage door openers, etc.).
• Close windows and sunroofs completely.
• Park in well-lit areas whenever possible and consider motion lights or cameras at home.
• Check your vehicle each night to ensure it is secured before going to bed.
• Report suspicious activity immediately, especially individuals checking door handles or moving between parked vehicles late at night. Campbell County Campbell County, KY 911 Dispatch non-emergency line is (859)292-3622.

Many of these crimes are crimes of opportunity. Taking a few extra seconds to secure your vehicle can greatly reduce the chance of becoming a victim.

Please help us spread the word by reminding family members, neighbors, and friends to lock their vehicles and remove their keys.

Happy National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week!

This week, the Cold Spring Police Department - Kentucky would like to recognize and thank the dedicated dispatchers at Campbell County, KY 911 Dispatch for the critical role they play in every call for service. While they may not be seen on scene, they are often the first point of contact in emergencies—answering 911 calls, gathering vital information, prioritizing incidents, and coordinating the response of police, fire, and EMS.

Dispatchers manage multiple calls at once, provide life-saving instructions over the phone, and ensure officers and first responders have the information they need to do their jobs safely and effectively. They remain calm under pressure, make split-second decisions, and serve as the constant line of communication during chaotic and often high-stress situations.

Thank you to all dispatchers for your continued service and dedication to our community.
