There is a higher probability of flash flooding tonight through southwest Kansas due to previous rains combining with a very moist environment and a storm system which will produce efficient rain making storms. Locally heavier rains could lead to ponding on area roadways by tomorrow morning.

Yesterday afternoon, during the course of an ongoing copper theft investigation, the Comanche County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at a residence in Protection. The search resulted in the recovery of approximately 500 lbs. of copper materials believed to be stolen and the arrest of Eric Boyles of Protection.

Boyles was booked into the Kiowa County Jail on requested charges of felony theft and burglary. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. The investigation remains ongoing.

With scrap metal prices increasing, the Sheriff’s Office would also like to remind residents that copper and other metals can become attractive targets for theft. We encourage residents, farmers, businesses, and contractors to take precautions to secure copper wire, pipe, HVAC components, tools, and other valuable materials.

Please pay particular attention to vacant residences, farmsteads, outbuildings, construction sites, and other properties that may be unattended for extended periods. If you observe suspicious activity around these locations, contact the Comanche County Sheriff’s Office.

With the thick fog moving through our area, please remember to manually turn your headlights on. Most vehicles that have automatic headlights will not turn on simply due to fog.

Notice to Registered Offenders:

Effective July 1, 2026 the Kansas Legislature has enacted a new statewide offender registration technology fee through Senate Bill 487. This law adds an additional $10 fee to offender registrations completed in the offender's county of residence.

This additional fee is mandated by state law, established by the State of Kansas to fund the replacement and maintenance of the Kansas offender registration system.

In summary, offenders will be required to pay an extra $10 fee in addition to the current $20 registration fee in their county of residence each time they register. This does not apply to offenders registering in counties they do not reside in for work, school, etc.

Should you have any questions about these changes, please reach out to our office.
