We’d like to thank Bob Jordan, CEO of Southwest Airlines and former student, for visiting and sharing his career journey with us.

He mentioned that Southwest Airlines and Texas A&M University both seem to attract nice people who look to serve others before themselves. He also offered attendees some advice: “Pour yourself into whatever you’re doing and enjoy it. Every job I've had has been my favorite job.”

It’s always wonderful to see you, Mr. Jordan!

We hosted our first outreach event for the Galveston community!

On Friday, Sept. 25, we welcomed high school counselors, career and technical education directors, AP science teachers and college transfer specialists for our Computer Science Open House.

Attendees learned about pathways to earn a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at our Texas A&M University Galveston Campus location. The day included a tour of the state-of-the-art maker space, where students can design and develop their engineering projects, in the new Engineering Classroom and Research Building (ECRB).

We had about 50 attendees, including 15 high school students from Montgomery Independent School District who are studying computer science and robotics. Students played a cryptographic scavenger hunt game in ECRB that was designed and led by some current students taking the applied cryptography course!

Large language models can lie.

In Aletheia’s Quest, an AI lie-detection challenge, competition organizers induced LLMs to lie. Then contestants built lie detectors.

Congratulations to undergraduate student Serhii Honcharenko and his team, FlaiChi, for winning first place in the black-box track and second place in the white-box track of the competition!

"We shouldn't just be aiming for superintelligence, but for safe superintelligence. To get there, one problem we have to solve is telling when an AI model is lying, and Aletheia's Quest was a great opportunity to tackle it," said Honcharenko.

Honcharenko and teammate Xingrun Chen (a visiting student from UCLA), worked under the guidance of Dr. Kuan-Hao Huang. Special thanks to Dr. Hanjie Chen, assistant professor at Rice University, and Dr. Jiawei Zhou, assistant professor at Stony Brook University, for their support and collaboration.

Aletheia’s Quest was organized by Cadenza Labs and the NSF National Deep Inference Fabric and supported by Schmidt Sciences.
