🚑 WHAT’S THAT WEDNESDAY IS BACK! 🚑
You asked, we listened!
We’ve heard from quite a few of you that you’ve missed our What’s That Wednesday posts, and we’re excited to announce that they’re making a comeback!
For those who are new here, What’s That Wednesday is where we take you behind the scenes at Fieldale-Collinsville Rescue Squad to show you some of the equipment we carry, explain how it works, and share how it helps us care for our community.
🔎 SO, WHAT’S THAT?!
This week’s spotlight is on one of our newest additions: IV Fluid Warmers!
We’ve recently equipped both Medic 411 and Medic 415 with IV fluid warmers, giving our crews access to warmed IV fluids when they’re needed.
💉 WHAT DO THEY DO?
When you think about receiving an IV, you probably don’t give much thought to the temperature of the fluid going into your body.
But temperature can make a big difference!
IV fluids are typically stored at room temperature, which is considerably cooler than your body’s normal temperature of approximately 98.6°F.
Our new IV fluid warmers keep bags of normal saline at a controlled, warmer temperature so they’re ready for use when needed.
🌡️ WHY DOES IT MATTER?
For patients experiencing significant trauma, blood loss, or hypothermia, maintaining body temperature is an important part of emergency care.
Administering large amounts of room-temperature IV fluids can contribute to a drop in body temperature, something we want to avoid, especially in critically ill or injured patients.
Hypothermia can interfere with the body’s ability to clot blood, potentially making an already serious situation even worse.
Having warmed IV fluids available gives our providers another tool to help prevent unnecessary heat loss during patient care.
❤️ GOING BEYOND THE MINIMUM
Here’s something you might not know!
Virginia does not require ambulances to carry IV fluid warmers as part of their standard equipment requirements.
But at Fieldale-Collinsville Rescue Squad, we believe providing exceptional patient care means doing more than simply meeting the minimum requirements.
Just because something isn’t required doesn’t mean it can’t make a difference.
These new warmers represent another investment in our patients, our providers, and the community we’re proud to serve.
Because when you call us on one of your worst days, you deserve our very best.
🚑 That’s it for today’s What’s That Wednesday folks!
We’re glad to have this series back, and we can’t wait to show you more of the equipment, technology, and tools that help us serve our community!
