🌲 Wildfire mitigation work is coming to Union Meadows Open Space.

Beginning Oct. 19, our friends at the Colorado Springs Fire Department will partner with City Forestry as well as our team on a fuels mitigation project to help reduce wildfire risk.

🚧 For everyone’s safety, all trails leading into the project area will be closed from Oct. 19 through approximately Nov. 27. Work dates are tentative.

Please check the map for closure locations, respect posted closures and give crews room to work. Thank you for your patience as we work together to care for our open spaces and help protect our community!

🌄 Today, the City of Colorado Springs proudly recognizes Indigenous Peoples Day. We honor the powerful legacy and enduring presence of Native American tribes in the Pikes Peak Region. From the Ute, Kiowa, Apache, Comanche, Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes to many more, their deep-rooted connections to this land span thousands of years.

Our Department regularly consults with tribal representatives to help guide our work across parks, open spaces, cultural sites, programs and more, ensuring Indigenous histories, cultures and stories are represented accurately and respectfully.

Join us in recognizing the enduring contributions, stories and stewardship of Indigenous peoples in our community.

🚧 Trail closure alert! Starting Monday, Oct. 12, the Greenway Trail on the west side of Monument Creek in Monument Valley Park will close for up to four weeks as crews continue work on the historic Cache La Poudre/Mesa Road Bridge.

The trail on the east side of the creek will remain open, with a short pedestrian detour in place. Trail users can cross Monument Creek at the Uintah Street bridge or the pedestrian bridge near the south end of the park.

Thanks for your patience as we work to preserve this 90-year-old bridge and improve safety and access!

The Park System Master Plan is one step closer to adoption! The Colorado Springs Parks Advisory Board has voted to recommend the updated Park System Master Plan to City Council for final consideration.
The plan will help guide decisions about our city's parks, trails, open spaces, recreation opportunities and cultural services over the next 10 to 15 years.

Shaped by community input, the plan is built around four guiding principles:
1. Preserve Our Legacy: Care for our existing parks and protect our natural resources.

2. Strengthen Community Connection: Bring people together through partnerships, recreation and cultural services.

3. Create Exceptional Experiences: Enhance our parks, trails and public spaces for everyone to enjoy.

4. Invest in Our Future: Plan for sustainable growth and the long-term needs of our community.

A big round of weather is headed our way, with heavy rain and strong winds expected across the Pikes Peak region. If you’re heading outside, use extra caution (especially on trails).

🌧️ Trails can become muddy, slippery and difficult to navigate
⛰️ If conditions turn, turn around!

🌿 A piece of Colorado Springs history is getting ready to welcome people back.

More than 120 years after the original park opened, Old Stratton Park has a new plan for its next chapter. 🏞️

The newly finalized Master & Management Plan lays out a vision for this 8.48-acre property as a quiet, low-impact neighborhood park — with walking trails, creek overlooks, opportunities to experience nature and ways to learn about the site’s rich history.

And the exciting part? The first improvements are planned to help open the park to the public in 2027. 👀

The plan was shaped by community input and balances public access with protecting the creek, pond, forest, wildlife habitat and natural character that make Old Stratton Park so special.

There’s still more to come, including decisions about the future of the historic P.E.O. building and potential opportunities for gathering, nature play and education.
