Wait your turn. Be kind. Pay attention. Slow down.

Sound familiar? These are lessons we learned in kindergarten. And now, Colorado Springs kids are reminding us that they apply behind the wheel, too! 🚗

Today, we joined Colorado Springs Police Department and Drive Smart Colorado to launch “Remember What You Learned,” a new traffic safety campaign featuring local schoolchildren sharing some important reminders for grown-ups:

🚦 Wait your turn: Be patient and follow the rules of the road.

💛 Be kind: Share the road and give others space.

👀 Pay attention: Put the phone down and focus on driving.

🐢 Slow down: Follow speed limits and drive for the conditions.

Because sometimes the best driving advice comes from the backseat. 😉

This campaign is part of our Safe Streets COS initiative, working to make our roads safer for everyone, whether you're driving, walking, or biking.

Can you believe these two videos were taken just FOUR working days apart?! 🤯

Crews have completed installing 24 bridge girders, marking a major milestone for the Powers Boulevard Extension project. Each girder is 105 feet long and weighs 105,000 pounds.

This is the first of three planned bridges for the project, which, when fully completed, will carry Flying Horse Club Drive traffic over the future Powers Boulevard.

Why does this matter? This long-planned regional transportation improvement will help reduce congestion, improve traffic flow, and strengthen connections between northeast Colorado Springs, I-25 and surrounding communities. 🚗

Good news, drivers! Newly repaved lanes on South 8th Street between Motor City Drive and Abbot Lane are NOW OPEN! 🎉

Crews have also completed major water main and drainage improvements in this section to help reduce flooding during heavy rain.

Here's what else you need to know: Traffic between Lower Gold Camp Road and Costilla Street has shifted to the east side of the road for approximately four weeks. One lane remains open in each direction. Access to local businesses remains open throughout construction.

There's still work ahead, so please slow down, follow posted signs and watch for crews.

🎉 PROJECT UPDATE: Huber Road is OPEN! ✅

Good news, Colorado Springs! Huber Road at Marksheffel Road has officially reopened to traffic! 🙌

Drivers can now travel and make turns in all directions at the Marksheffel Road and Stetson Hills Boulevard/Huber Road intersection.

🚗 A quick heads-up: Construction continues on Marksheffel Road, with one lane open in each direction. Please slow down and watch for crews as they finish the remaining work.

Update on the 8th Street Improvements Project:

Major stormwater work beneath South 8th Street between Abbot Lane and Motor City Drive is nearly complete!

As crews finish the work, lane closures and turn restrictions in the area are being removed. Newly paved lanes between Abbot Lane and Motor City Drive are scheduled to open Oct. 12, weather permitting.

Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 6, water main and stormwater work will shift north to the intersection of South 8th Street and Moreno Avenue. Traffic will shift to the west side of the intersection, with intermittent lane closures and turn restrictions. Drivers should slow down, use caution and watch for flaggers directing traffic.

Crews also reached a major milestone on the Fountain Creek bridge on Sept. 21, placing a 64-foot-long, 28.6-ton, concrete box girder on the west side of the bridge. Drivers may encounter occasional daytime right-lane closures on the bridge as crews continue work on the bridge, road deck, and sidewalk.

Access to local businesses remains open and clearly marked throughout the project area. Drivers should plan for extra travel time, slow down, and use caution in work zones.

CDOT has been busy on our state-owned roads! Several major transportation projects are underway across the city, totaling $250 million in investment. This includes improvements along I-25, Powers Boulevard, South Academy Boulevard, and routes that provide critical access to our military installations.

We know road work can be inconvenient, but these projects are investments in the infrastructure our community relies on every day. Thank you to the State of Colorado, CDOT, and our regional partners for investing in the roads that keep Colorado Springs moving. 👏

Chief Royal has devoted his career to protecting our community, strengthening CSFD, and caring for people in their moments of greatest need. His leadership, innovation and commitment to service have left a lasting impact on our city.
