TODAY WAS A GREAT DAY TO BE A PIRATE!
Today was our seasons home opener for Miller County Rec Football & Cheer, and to say this day has been a long time coming would be an understatement.
Our 8U tackle team, led by Coach Lee Nix, took the field for a 9:30 kickoff against Bainbridge. Our girls cheer squad, led by Coach Jamey Whiddon, was loud, proud, and ready to represent Miller County from the very beginning!
Our 8U boys started out hot, but by the end of the game, they ran out of gas against a much bigger opponent. Even so, they never hung their heads. They gained valuable experience today, and most importantly, they showed the fight and determination we want to see from our Pirates.
Then came our 10U team, led by Coach Ciriaco Chavez.
The boys had a mountain to climb against a well-seasoned Bainbridge team. The first half wasn't what they had hoped for, but these young men didn't quit.
Then came the second half.
A 70-YARD RUSHING TOUCHDOWN!
And that’s when you knew...
WE HAD A CHEER SQUAD!
Led by Coach Joy Hayman, the girls brought the energy, the crowd went absolutely nuts, and for a moment, you could feel exactly what we've been waiting for.
THIS is what Miller County Rec has been missing.
At the end of the day, both of our teams came up short on the scoreboard. But today wasn't just about wins and losses.
Today was a step forward.
A step toward rebuilding.
A step toward something bigger.
A step toward giving our kids something to be proud of.
To say we are proud of this young group of boys and girls is an understatement. They have faced obstacles, challenges, and plenty of reasons to doubt themselves — but they showed up, they competed, and they represented Miller County.
There is still a LOT of work ahead for both teams. But that's okay.
This is just the beginning.
These boys and girls are our future. What we started today is the foundation for a brighter future for Miller County Recreation.
And if today was any indication of what's ahead...
The future is looking pretty bright.
Thank you to our coaches, cheerleaders, players, parents, families, and everyone who came out to support these kids.
Miller County Pirates this is just the start.
