Columbia Heights Fire Explorer Post #3778 To develop, train, and prepare interested young adults ages 14 - 21 for a career in fire fighting and emergency medical servies.

The purpose of Fire Explorer Post #3778 is to develop, train, and prepare interested young adults for a career in fire fighting and emergency medical services and to provide basic types of assistance to the Columbia Heights Fire Department during and immediately after firefighting and emergency medical activities. It is our hope the Cadet will become familiar with the role the Fire Department plays in community life, how it is structured, and how it functions during normal and emergency activities. It is also our hope that the Cadet understands how the city government is structured, how departments are funded, and how the individual plays an important role in city governmental activities.

Last week, CHFD Fire Explorers had some hands-on time with vehicle extrication. Firefighters use a variety of tools to gain access to damaged vehicles and help patients. While this drill provided Explorers a chance to experience working with the tools, it takes a significant amount of training to become skilled enough to use these effectively on critical calls.

The Columbia Heights Explorers were busy this summer. They spent several weeks preparing for the Explorer contest at Governors Fire Prevention Day at the MN State Fair. While we have a younger group, they still managed to place 4th overall. We also had two of our Explorers in the semi-finals for gear donning.

Now that we're into fall, we'll continue to work on fire skills until it gets a little colder. Then we'll shift our focus to medical skills. This past week, the group focused on things Explorers can do to support operations on the fireground.

It's been a while since we've posted but that doesn't mean our Explorers haven't been busy. A couple weeks ago they had the opportunity to visit Anoka County Dispatch. Besides regular training this year, they also helped with cleaning up Highway 47 (with the Columbia Heights Lions), toured a fire truck manufacturer with the Rum River Fire Explorers, and practiced Ice Rescue with the Fridley Fire Explorers.
