As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, we celebrate the Hispanic and Latino community and the many ways they contribute to the fabric of Howard County.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with the owner of Celia’s Cuban Cuisine to learn more about his story, the family traditions behind the food, and the recipes passed down through generations.

Our local businesses do more than serve our community; they help tell its story and keep traditions alive.

Thank you to the team at Celias Cuban Cuisine for welcoming us and sharing a little piece of Cuba with Howard County!

Indigenous Peoples’ Day reminds us that history matters, including the parts we may not want to confront.

Long before the United States existed, Indigenous nations had their own governments, cultures, and deep ties to this land. Colonization brought forced removal, broken treaties, and generations of harm. That history is part of our nation’s story, whether we acknowledge it or not. At a time when efforts to rewrite or erase history continue, telling the truth matters.

Here in Howard County, we live on the ancestral lands of the Piscataway and Susquehannock peoples. We have a responsibility to learn about their history and enduring connection to this region, and to make sure our children learn it, too.

Take a few minutes today to learn something new. Share it with someone else. We cannot change the past, but we can choose how honestly we remember it and what we do with those lessons today.

A week later, and I’m still grateful for this night and that beautiful outdoor space.

It wasn’t just celebrating another rotation around the sun. It was looking around and seeing people from so many different chapters of my life and public service, along with the friends, family, volunteers, and neighbors who have been part of this journey.

I was especially grateful to have Sarah Elfreth, Calvin Ball, Senator Clarence Lam, and Christiana Rigby there with us. What meant the most was hearing them speak not just about the work happening at the federal, state, and local levels, but about the experience I’ve gained along the way and why they believe I’m prepared for this moment.

I don’t take that kind of reflection lightly.

One thing I shared that night has stayed with me: campaigning asks people to place their trust in you. Public service requires you to earn that trust every day.

Thank you to everyone who came out, celebrated with me, supported this campaign, and has been part of the journey so far.

More to come, and plenty of work to get done.

Celebrating 20 Years of Community, Impact & Superhero Strength!

What an incredible turnout for our 20th Celebration of the Every Step Counts Walk & 5K at Centennial Park! Together, we brought out nearly 1,100 walkers and runners and have raised over $150,000 to date in support of the Autism Society of Maryland’s programs and services!

We want to send a heartfelt thank you to our incredible community leaders, elected officials, and title sponsors who joined us to make this milestone celebration so special:

VIP Speakers: Howard County Executive Calvin Ball, Howard County Councilwoman Christiana Rigby, Maryland’s Statewide Autism Coordinator Victoria Rodriguez Roldan, and Anjanette Bizzarro representing our Title Sponsor, Pete Pappas & Sons Inc.!

VIP Attendees: We also want to recognize our special guests in attendance, including Past Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman, Delegate Chau Wu (District 9), Delegate Jen Terrasa - Howard County (District 13), Delegate Terri Hill (District 12), Delegate Gabriel Moreno (District 13), Howard County Public Schools Superintendent William Barnes, Vanessa Atterbeary (Democratic Nominee for Howard County Executive), and Janssen Evelyn For HoCo District 4 Democratic Nominee for Howard County Council, District 4).

Honoring Alex Lamorie
This year’s event held profound meaning as we dedicated the day to the memory of Alex Lamorie, a cherished member of our community whom we tragically lost in March. We were deeply moved to be joined by Alex’s mom, sister, stepfather, and extended family and friends as we observed a moment of silence in his honor.

Thank you to everyone who walked, ran, volunteered, cheered, and supported our mission. Your energy, compassion, and superhero spirit mean the world to us!

A groundbreaking is the moment everyone gets to see. But some of the most important work happens years before the shovels ever hit the ground.

That’s what made the Howard County Conservancy Nature Playspace groundbreaking particularly meaningful for me.

I served on the Conservancy’s board from 2019 to 2026, including as Board President from 2023 to 2025. During that time, I saw ideas become plans, partnerships come together, and years of work turn into something real.

We surpassed 2,000 acres of permanently protected land in Howard County. We expanded youth climate education and leadership. We continued pushing to make nature and conservation more accessible. We emphasized justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. We worked to ensure that the story of this land was accurate. And we helped move the Nature Playspace from an idea on paper to a place where children will soon explore, learn, and play.

Being recognized for that service at the groundbreaking meant a lot. I love this place deeply and I had so much fun working with it's visionary Executive Director Meg Boyd.

But seeing something we dreamt up and worked on for years become real meant even more.

That’s the thing about conservation. You may not personally see the full impact of every decision you make.

You make it anyway, because you’re thinking about who comes next.

National Daughters Day.

My girls. My beloved Thing 1 & 2.

You girls make SFE and me laugh. Equally, you vex us as you increasingly challenge - but I suppose this is the way! 🤷🏾‍♂️

I still catch glimpses of the little girls you were while watching you become the young women you are becoming.

You keep me on my toes. And somehow, you remind me every day that some of the best parts of life are happening right in front of me.

You make our hearts burst with pride. You’re bright, self-motivated scholars, talented musicians, helpful around the house, and now star athletes too.

S&S, you honor the sacrifice of the ancestors. You respect the elders. And you’re both HER.

I'm grateful for every season with you.

Always go beyond. Plus Ultra (and remember Father knows best). 🤓
