UL Research Institutes' Fire Safety Research Institute advances fire safety knowledge to address the world’s unresolved fire safety risks and emerging dangers. Through advanced fire science, rigorous research, extensive outreach and education in collaboration with our international network of partners, we impart stakeholders with the information, tools and resources that enable them to make better, more fire-safe decisions that ultimately save lives and property. As part of UL Research Institutes, a world-leading independent safety science institution, through objective investigation, we sense emerging risks and work to keep people safer at home, at work, and in the world. As our research evolves to meet new global challenges, we are examining new risks presented by artificial intelligence, renewable energy systems, environmental toxicology, and wildfires.

When Peter Vieira of The Autopian covered the Fort Worth Fire Department’s response to an EV fire at a car dealership, he turned to research from UL Research Institutes' Fire Safety Research Institute to explain how firefighters should handle these calls.

Here’s what he shared from our EV fire research:

• Fight the vehicle fire first and the battery fire second.

• If the battery is involved, supervise it until thermal runaway stops.

• Use EV fire blankets in limited scenarios, outside only. They won’t stop thermal runaway, so leave them undisturbed and watch for reignition.

• Watch for reignition through overall, and consider escorting the tow truck to the lot.

Thanks to the crew at Station 23 for their work on this one, and to Peter for sharing our resources with his readers!

Every superhero’s story eventually reaches its final chapter.

As we wrap up our battery safety series, remember that even heroes need to recharge. However, just because you may recharge overnight, that is not the safest option for your larger lithium-ion battery-powered devices.

While this year’s may be ending, the habits that help keep homes and communities safe should continue throughout the rest of the year.

Fire is fast. Normally, you may have three minutes or less to escape a home fire. However, If a larger device such as an e-scooter is involved, once it ignites, it can fill a room with smoke in seconds, limiting your time to escape to one minute or less.

Planning ahead saves lives. Create and practice an escape plan with your loved ones to prepare in the case of a fire. Have a Plan A to use your primary exit and a Plan B with an alternate exit as a back up. If you’re unable to escape, don’t forget Plan C — get behind a closed door and call 9-1-1. Every superhero protects their power source.

The same goes for the batteries that power many of the devices we use everyday. Paying attention to where batteries are kept, what they are exposed to, and what is around them can go a long way toward helping keep your home safer.

Sometimes the most powerful safety habits are also the simplest. Share this post and stay tuned for more battery safety tips!

Make sure to charge larger devices (such as eBikes) away from your exit path and outside of your home if possible. Charging devices outside reduces the chance of a home fire and a clear exit path prevents delays during an evacuation.

Every superhero must study their weaknesses. Lithium-ion batteries aren’t just in e-Bikes, they’re likely all over your home! Identifying devices powered by lithium-ion batteries keeps you informed on fire risks. See if you can spot the lithium-ion battery devices in your home to know what to look out for. Our Fire Safety Academy courses are now available through participating training platforms.

That means you can access 35+ free, evidence-based courses in the same place you already complete online training, without jumping between websites, managing extra logins, or taking extra steps.

The first integrated platform is Advanced Problem Solving. Additional integrations are in active development and will be announced over the coming months.

With great charging comes great responsibility! 🔋This week we’ll be sharing tips on how you can handle charging with care.

Don’t skip out on reading the manufacturer’s instructions and use the charging equipment that comes with the device. Products are tested and given certifications to mitigate fire and shock risk, and using unapproved chargers is a hazard. While we all love a good bargain, always be sure to purchase replacements directly from the manufacturer when possible.
