Media and Public Information Release

On 10/19/2026, at approximately 5:17 pm, Boone County deputies were dispatched to investigate a report of shots fired in the 3600 block of N Route J. The caller reported the driver of another vehicle had pointed a fi***rm at them and discharged the fi***rm.

During the investigation, probable cause was developed to believe Dillon R. Ames, age 30 of Armstrong, MO, was driving carelessly on eastbound Highway 40 by passing when unsafe and causing oncoming traffic to swerve to avoid a collision. The complainant reported that the Ames then cut in on their vehicle, so they honked at Ames. The complainant said Ames then “brake checked” them but they were able to pass Ames’ vehicle.

The complainant advised they turned north on Route J and Ames followed. The complainant said Ames was then “tailgating” them, so they hit their brakes to get Ames to back off. The complainant reported that Ames then produced a handgun and pointed it at the complainant’s vehicle. The complainant reported Ames then stopped his vehicle, allowed a passenger to exit, and the complainant heard two gunshots.

The passenger that exited Ames’ vehicle was located and interviewed. Witnesses, including a passenger in the complainant’s vehicle at the time of the incident, provided corroborating statements.

Ames was located by law enforcement personnel in Fayette, MO, and was found to be operating a vehicle matching the description of what had been reported. A handgun was also found to be in Ames’ possession. Ames was transported to the Boone County Jail, where probable cause was developed to believe Ames was intoxicated.

Ames was arrested and booked into the Boone County Jail. On 10/20/2026, the Boone County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Ames, and a no bond warrant was issued for Ames for the following offenses:
• Assault 1st Degree (2 counts)
• Armed Criminal Action (3 counts)
• Unlawful Use of Weapon
• DWI – Prior Offender
• Operated a Motor Vehicle in a Careless and Impudent Manner

All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

On 09/06/2026, around 1:30 am to 2:00 am, Boone County deputies responded to assist the Columbia Police Department with crowd control and disturbances in the area of Walnut Street and Ninth Street. Multiple people were arrested by the Columbia Police Department, but a crowd continued to linger in the area.

At around 2:45 am, at least one gunshot was heard, and it was believed to come from the courtyard near the Boone County Courthouse and the Boone County Government Center. Deputies were unable to locate the suspect, a fi***rm, any persons with injuries from gunfire, or any damage to property; however, the Sheriff’s Office continued to investigate.

During the investigation, multiple video recordings were recovered and probable cause was developed to believe Lorenzo R. Estes, age 33 of Columbia, displayed a handgun equipped with a laser and pointed the fi***rm/laser at the victims in the area of the courtyard near the Boone County Courthouse and Government Center during the incident on 09/06/2026 before discharging the handgun into the air.
