Some people leave a mark on a city that time can never erase. Brian DeQuincey Newman was one of those people. 🩵

I am honored to celebrate his life, accomplishments, and lasting legacy with the naming of Brian DeQuincey Newman Street in the BullStreet community.

As the youngest person ever elected to Columbia City Council, Brian brought vision, intelligence, and a heart for service to his work. He helped champion the BullStreet development and expand transportation opportunities through the COMET—contributions that continue to connect our people and move Columbia forward.

How fitting that his name now stands in a community he helped envision. This street will give future generations a reason to ask about Brian, learn his story, and understand what it means to serve with purpose.

🩵 I’m grateful for the opportunity to participate in conversations that bring together community leaders, entrepreneurs, and business professionals to explore how we can strengthen Columbia’s connections to the global marketplace.

The Global Business x South Carolina: Building Connections Across Markets conversation highlighted the importance of international business relationships, cross-cultural collaboration, and creating opportunities for businesses to connect, grow, and thrive across markets. Engaging in these discussions allows us to exchange ideas, learn from different perspectives, and explore how Columbia can continue to position itself as a welcoming city for innovation, entrepreneurship, and global investment.

Thank you to Yili Fan | Carolinas AAPI Business Alliance for creating happy hour events like this to connect with the community. I appreciated the opportunity to engage with South Carolina Representative Heather Bauer and Jiller Zheng, CEO of Envirosax Sustainable Ltd to openly talk about our shared interests to collaborate and see Columbia continue to thrive!

🩵 I’m excited to host Gather for Good: An Evening of Music, Community, and Hope on Thursday, November 5!

This is more than a community block party! It’s an opportunity for Columbia to come together with purpose. Join us at Gather COLA from 5:30–8:30 p.m. for live music by The Fr3sh Band, local vendors, great food, fellowship and stories of hope and success.

As we recognize H.O.P.E. Week, we’re also shining a light on the work being done to help individuals move from homelessness to stable housing. Every purchase and every show of support helps us continue building a Columbia where everyone has an opportunity to thrive.

We’ve come a long way from where we started with the renovation of Finlay Park, but we made it, and the icing on the cake is that we’re already celebrating our first national award before the first anniversary of its opening!

It has been a joy to join our Parks and Recreation team in Philadelphia for the National Recreation and Park Association Annual Conference, where Finlay Park received the 2026 Innovation in Park Design Award last night.

This recognition reflects the dedication, creativity, and heart of everyone who helped bring our vision for Finlay Park to life. Thank you to Assistant City Manager Henry Simons, Parks & Recreation Director Kenya Bryant, Landscape Architect Todd Martin, Deputy Director for Finlay Park John Katz, and our entire team for making this first year of excellence a year to remember.

We’ve created a place for our community to gather, play, and make lasting memories once again!

We desire to be a city where people from all walks of life have an opportunity to thrive.

Our City of Columbia Homeless Services Department recently hosted a screening of Beyond the Bridge Beyond The Bridge, a documentary that opened the door for an important conversation about homelessness, our unsheltered population, and the collective responsibility we share in creating meaningful and lasting solutions.

I am grateful to the filmmakers, Don Sawyer and Tim Hashko, for bringing this conversation to the screen and to the members of our community who offered their voices, experiences, and perspectives during the discussion.

As Columbia continues to grow and invest in our infrastructure, neighborhoods, businesses, and public spaces, we must also prioritize the human infrastructure of our city. That means strengthening our partnerships with local organizations, nonprofits, service providers, faith communities, and advocates who are already doing tremendous work to support our unsheltered population.

This is not simply a City Manager, Mayor, or City Council. It is a community effort—and that spirit of collaboration reflects the values of the City of Columbia.

What a wonderful evening celebrating leadership, service, and individuals who continue to make a meaningful impact in our community! 🩵🏙️ Congratulations to Councilman McDowell on receiving the NAACP Columbia, SC Branch Presidential Award — “The Called, Committed, Compelled to Serve.” This recognition reflects his longstanding commitment to ministry, neighborhood advocacy, public service, and strengthening the communities he represents. I am proud to serve alongside him and grateful for the heart and dedication he continues to bring to the City of Columbia.

Also, a special congratulations to Bakari Sellers and Antjuan Seawright, who were presented with Keys to the City of Columbia last night in recognition of their contributions to our city and community. Both are proud voices with deep connections to Columbia whose leadership and service continue to reach well beyond our city limits. 🩵🔑🏙️

I’ve learned that being in the room is about more than having a seat at the table—it’s about the value of the voice you bring with you. I’m grateful for every person who paved the way for me, poured into me, and recognized that my work and experiences—not simply my title—are what define the leader I continue to become.

Now, I have a responsibility to be that same valuable voice for the women coming after me—to advocate, create opportunities, and help keep doors open. Leadership is about more than where you sit; it’s about who you bring with you and how you use your influence to make room for others.

I never walk into a room representing only myself. I carry my family, my incredible executive team and City staff who support me every day, and the citizens of Columbia whom I have the privilege to serve. I’m thankful for those who opened doors for me, and I remain committed to holding those doors open for the next generation. 🩵

I’m energized reflecting on yesterday’s town hall regarding Booker Washington Heights community.

We covered it all: housing, development, public safety, crime reduction, and home improvements, along with valuable input from Public Works, Fire, and Parks & Recreation. These weren’t just discussions…They were solutions taking shape in real time.

I’m especially grateful to Councilmen Ed McDowell and Sam Johnson for their leadership, patience, and commitment as we worked through thoughtful questions from the community.

Let me be clear: we have your back… on every block, every corner. Together, we are building a stronger, safer, and more thriving Columbia for all.
