Tomorrow, April 14th from 9:00 am - until (all plants are gone), UGA Extension Master Gardeners will be giving away plants to needy gardeners! Plant It Forward will be held in conjunction with the outdoor farmers market MercyMed of Columbus Farm, located on Second Avenue. This event is geared to those who want to take pride in their community, one yard at a time, who may not have the means to purchase plants on their own. Local Master Gardeners are sharing plants that already thrive in their own gardens, and will be available to answer questions about planting and growing a variety of flowers, edibles and other plants. Please note only 4 plants per person/family. Parking will be on 3rd Avenue and 38th Street.

Due to the volume of fledgling songbird calls we're receiving, it's time for a nesting season PSA:
We know it's tempting to "rescue" fledglings. They look so helpless, and they are, but nine times out of ten their parents are nearby, waiting for you to go away so they can continue caring for their babies.
If a fledgling is in the street, herd it into a safer location. If you're concerned about your cat or dog getting it, control your pets; they're the problem, not the fledgling that's just doing what fledglings do: learning how to operate in it's new environment.
They'll spend anywhere from a few hours to a few days on the ground until they learn the basics of flight. The best thing you can do is provide them with a safe space to learn during this critical developmental period.
If you encounter a fledgling that is obviously wounded, find a local wildlife rehabilitator using Animal Help Now (https://ahnow.org/ #/). They'll provide instruction on how best to handle your particular situation. Otherwise, if you care, leave them there!

With spring fast approaching, how do you know when is the right time to sow seeds for vegetable transplants? The answer is... it depends. Typically, it is 6-8 weeks from when the transplants will be planted in the garden, however, you will want to check the plant's particular requirements (found on the back of the seed packet) as well as the last frost date for your area. For general planting dates, you can always consult the UGA planting chart.
