Today Colin Smith fullfilled his 2 year resident contract with CFR. Over the course of his time with us here he put in over 3038 on call hours, and responded to over 300 calls for service. He completed his EMT course and received his State and National registry license. Stillwater County DES has lifted Stage 1 fire restrictions as of today, Sept. 11. The burn permit system, however, remains off — outdoor debris burning is still not authorized until it's reactivated.

DES is reminding residents to stay cautious: use care with campfires, equipment, vehicles, welding, chains and other spark-producing activities; never leave a fire unattended; fully extinguish campfires before leaving; and avoid parking or driving in tall, dry grass.

To report a wildfire or unattended fire, call 911.

The Columbus and Park City fire departments are following a national trend. Many rural and small-town departments are consolidating as the number of volunteer firefighters is dropping.

Columbus Fire Chief Rich Cowger told MTN that the departments are considering consolidating due to rising costs of fire equipment and upcoming expenses.

Today we are going to take a minute to congratulate and honor these 3 fine young men. The 3 of them have participated in our resident firefighter program. (One is still in the program currently) with a common goal of becoming firefighter paramedics. The 3 enrolled in MSU Billings paramedic program and after 1000's of hours of training and instruction we are very excited to report that all 3 are now National Registered and Montana State Paramedics!

Pictured left to right:

Braden Talarico was a resident firefighter from 6/8/24 - 6/8/26. He finished our program and has accepted a position at Kalispell fire Department.

Peyton Smith still has 1 year left in our program and with that has set the record as the youngest licensed medic in the program at 19 years of age!

Connor Hunter was a resident firefighter from 2/29/24 - 2/29/26. After he finished the resident program he accepted a full-time seasonal position with us here at CFR on our fuels mitigation crew.

We are so proud to have been a part of their journey and wish them the best of luck as they continue their careers! Thank you all for your hardwork and dedication to helping others and for being a part of the CFR family! -Battalion Chief Travis S. Hansen
