The share of U.S. physician practices that are physician-owned has fallen from 58% in 2020 to 36.1% in 2026. Since 2018, the number of physicians practicing independently nationwide has dropped by 152,200.

Behind those numbers are decisions about patient care, practice teams and the future of physician-owned medicine.

OSMA works to protect physician-owned practices in Ohio by pushing back on insurer policies and reimbursement rules that make it harder to remain independent.

Next up in our 2026 Summer Scholar Spotlights: Helena Li!

The Ohio State University College of Medicine medical student spent her summer working in Noor Community Clinic’s diabetes specialty clinic. For Helena, one of the most rewarding parts was seeing patients return, celebrating their progress and helping them navigate setbacks.

She also worked with LifeCare Alliance to bring retinal scans into clinic appointments. The experience inspired her research into how dedicated diabetes care within a free clinic can improve patient outcomes.

Helena plans to continue volunteering at Noor this fall, and we can’t wait to see what she does next!

This week is Falls Prevention Awareness Week, and it's a reminder of something Ohio physicians see constantly: the care that keeps patients safest is the care built on a relationship over time.

The best way to treat a fall is to prevent it entirely. And prevention rarely happens in a single visit. It happens because a physician knows a patient's history, reviews their medications, asks questions, and takes the time needed to assess risks.
