Happy National Health Education Week!

is celebrated the third week of October to increase national awareness of major public health issues and to create a better understanding of the role of health education.

A health educator helps to assess the community's health and develops strategies and programs to teach community members about ways they can improve their health and wellness.

Our health educator in-training, Isabel Bayer, makes us proud every day but we're especially excited to celebrate her this week! Isabel works with our communities by partnering with our Community Health Action Teams (CHATs), supporting our Gardens HEAL Program, which provides hands-on nutrition education in partnership with The Ohio State University Extension Master Gardener Volunteers, and so much more!

“I got into public health to educate people about how public health impacts their lives.”

Today we’re excited to feature Brittany Walling, our Injury Prevention Liaison II here at FCPH!

Brittany has been with us for four years after working at Delaware Health District as an epidemiologist and helping to restart their Project DAWN program. That’s when she strengthened her understanding of naloxone, and from there fell in love with overdose prevention!

What does she do now? She meets with our overdose prevention partners and connects them with one another to help fill gaps in services. She also engages in outreach, assists with events and finds resources that could be beneficial to our partners and the community.

“What motivates me is knowing that I can help make people’s lives a little easier,” she said. “I also love being part of a team and engaging in creative problem solving.”

She’s currently in grad school earning her master’s in social work, so her spare time is typically spent writing papers and completing an internship. Outside of school, she loves to crochet, binge watch documentaries, listen to podcasts (she was just on our Health is Real podcast!), read, go on nature walks, play pickleball, and nap! Who doesn’t love a good nap?

Thank you, Brittany, for all the work you do to help our community!

In honor of Ohio Stormwater Awareness Week, we're excited to introduce you to a member of our Water Quality team.

Meet Rachel Perry, an Environmental Health Specialist-in-Training (and her new puppy, Bogey)! Next month, Rachel will celebrate her one-year anniversary at FCPH! Before she joined the FCPH team, Rachel worked at Morrow County Health in their Food Safety and Community Health Programs.

“I moved to Franklin County from Youngstown about 4 years ago, and this community has really become home to me. What most interested me in working for Franklin County Public Health was the opportunity to serve and work closely with the same community that I get to call home!”

According to Rachel, “for someone who works in the Water Quality Program, Ohio Stormwater Awareness Week is important because some Franklin County sewage treatment systems can discharge into the storm drains that lead to our rivers and streams. What happens in our yards and drains matters downstream!”

In her spare time, Rachel enjoys yoga and spending time with her new adventure buddy, Bogey, who will be 9 months old next month! Happy birthday, Bogey! 🐾Together, they enjoy hiking and exploring local metroparks, especially the canopy walk in Blacklick woods. Bogey is a little scared to go to the Hoover reservoir, but maybe that will change when he gets a little older.

Thanks for all you do Rachel!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the US, after skin cancer.

This October, along with our partners in the cancer care and support community, we encourage you to:

- Know your risk and take preventative steps like maintaining an active lifestyle and limiting alcohol and to***co.

- Get Screened - regular mammograms are the best way to detect breast cancer early, when it may be easier to treat.

- Take Action - Talk to your health care provider about signs and symptoms and don't wait if you have concerns.

On this first FCPH Friday in October we're excited to recognize one of our amazing nursing heroes - Brooke from the Infectious Disease team!

Brooke has been with Franklin County Public Health for almost 10 years. Prior to joining the FCPH team, she worked in outpatient dialysis treatment which led to her interest in infectious disease and public health. “I never really pictured myself doing this type of work when I was in nursing school, but I’m really glad my career led me here. I enjoy being able to use my nursing background in a different way, especially through education and prevention, and I love that there is always something new to learn.”

There isn’t a typical day when it comes to infectious disease investigations. Some of the many tasks they handle are following up on reportable disease cases, talking with healthcare facilities or schools, or working on outreach and education projects. “You never quite know what is going to come up, which keeps things interesting.”

When Brooke isn’t using her talents at FCPH, she has a busy, energetic home life. Her children and family are involved in many fun activities around town. She practices self-care by running, baking sourdough, reading, and spending time with friends and family.

Thank you for all you do, Brooke - With you on our side, infectious diseases don't stand a chance! 🦸‍♀️

As we wrap up National Emergency Preparedness Month, we are excited to feature our Emergency Preparedness Supervisor, Sandy Ambris.

Sandy calls public health and emergency preparedness her passion, and while Sandy has worked for FCPH for about three years, she has more than 20 years of experience working in the emergency preparedness environment.

The International Association of Emergency Managers (IEAM) recently recognized Sandy as a Certified Emergency Manager® (CEM®) certification. This is the highest honor of professional achievement from IEAM. To earn this honor, Sandy demonstrated a high level of competence and ethical fitness for emergency management.

Sandy chose a career in Emergency Preparedness because she enjoys helping people and communities recover from disasters. She describes her role at FCPH as being geared towards community engagement, helping seniors and teaching in place of response and recovery.

She also added that her favorite part of working for FCPH are the other staff members that she gets to work with describing them as a great team with a welcoming culture.

In her free time, Sandy enjoys celebrating her Cleveland roots, fantasy football, golf and spending time with her nephews. Thank you Sandy, we're glad to have you in our corner in case emergency strikes!
