Tomorrow is Purple Thursday!
In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Thursday, October 15th, provides an opportunity show your support for victims of domestic violence, and to promote awareness and education about prevention by wearing purple.
According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in their lifetime, nearly 1 in 3 women and about 1 in 8 men experience contact s*xual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking and at least one related impact. Additionally, about 16 million women and 11 million men said that they first experienced intimate partner violence before age 18.
The lifetime economic cost of intimate partner violence related medical care, lost productivity from paid work, and criminal justice costs, is $5.6 trillion.
Domestic violence not only has a devastating physical and emotional impact on its victims, but societal costs as well.
Purple Thursday aims to support victims of domestic violence, inform people about the terrible lasting impact domestic violence has on survivors and its societal costs, and promote prevention education.
