On 09/11/26 the Stevens County Sheriff's Office received a report of a human skull being located in the 2800 block of Deep Lake Boundary Rd. The skull had been brought to the property by the owner's dogs. An initial search of the area by law enforcement didn't reveal anything else. Plans were initiated to bring a human remains detection K9 to the area, however the K9 team was unavailable until mid-October.

The skull was turned over to Stevens County Chief Deputy Coroner Johnathan Waldrop who took it to the Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office. The skull was positively identified as Jason Anderson who had been reported missing on 02/20/24. He was last seen walking away from a residence on Deep Lake approximately 1/2 mile from where the skull was found. Anderson was believed to be armed and possibly suicidal. He was 25 at the time he went missing.

On 09/22/26 the Sheriff's Office was made aware the same dogs may have retrieved a femur and brought it to the property. Deputies responded and confirmed this to be true.

On 09/27/26 Stevens County Search and Rescue conducted an extensive search of the area. A single bone was found, and it has not yet been confirmed to be human or not. The area consists of dense foliage, a thick creek bottom, and steep terrain making searches difficult.

The family of the deceased had arranged for GPS tracking collars to be placed on the dogs and data collected from their movements will be analyzed. A further search with human remains detection dogs is planned for this weekend.

The investigation remains open and the cause and manner of death has not yet been confirmed.

BOCC PRESS RELEASE STEVENS COUNTY JUSTICE CENTER (SCJC) PROJECT UPDATE

Stevens County continues to move forward with planning and construction of the new Stevens County Justice Center (SCJC). We remain committed to this project and look forward to the many benefits it will bring to our community.

To date, the county has collected approximately $8.41 million from the voter-approved sales tax for this project, with an estimated $286,000 expected each month going forward. None of these funds have been spent yet. Additionally, about $2.3 million in federal ARPA-SLFRF and LATCF funds has been used to support major design components.

The county is also seeking roughly $4 million in federal USDA funding and is working to finalize a low-interest loan with the Washington State Department of Commerce Public Works Board, expected to carry an interest rate of about 0.53%.

Because tax revenues have come in lower than projected and construction costs have increased, the county has reduced the size and scope of the project to maintain fiscal responsibility and stay within approved cost parameters.

To manage costs, the county continues working with ALSC Architects, Turner & Townsend Heery (Owner’s Representative), and Lydig Construction (General Contractor/Construction Manager) to refine the Justice Center design.

In March 2026, the county established the Essential Public Facilities Siting Committee, as required by Countywide Planning Policies. The seven-member volunteer committee met four times in public meetings, evaluated and ranked potential sites, and submitted its recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC). The committee ultimately recommended the current BOCC location as the site for the new Justice Center.

The BOCC has held several public hearings to review the committee’s recommendations and gather public input, including discussion of a property that became available around May 2026 (parcel 0233501). The BOCC also directed the project team to compare parcel 0233501 with the Siting Committee’s recommended location — the current BOCC site.

The project team completed environmental and geotechnical studies on parcel 0233501 and compared the findings to conditions at the current BOCC site. This analysis assessed environmental and economic impacts and determined whether the alternative site offered stable, buildable ground.

Based on the analysis, the project team recommended the current BOCC location because it avoids property acquisition costs, provides more predictable geotechnical/soil conditions, maintains direct adjacency to the courthouse, reduces inmate transport between separate facilities, and supports a practical long-term County facility HUB development strategy.

On August 31, the Board entered public deliberations and unanimously approved a motion selecting the current BOCC site as the location for the new Justice Center.

The county will continue providing regular updates as this important project progresses.

For questions or comments, please contact the Board of County Commissioners at [email protected] or 509-684-3751.

The greater Stevens County public safety community is deeply saddened today after the loss of Colville PD Officer Aaron Davis to a tragic motorcycle accident on 08/24/26. Davis was a long time member of Colville PD and former Stevens County Corrections Deputy. With the nature of his job he also worked closely with local fire and EMS.

Those in the public safety community are not just coworkers, but also family and close friends and this loss hits hard. We especially grieve for Aaron's wife, children, and parents who many among us consider our family too. He is absolutely going to be missed by his community.

Below is a link to how we can give a little back what Aaron has given us over the years and help support his family.

Rest easy brother, we have it from here.

Earlier this week an inmate notified Corrections Deputies that one of their cell mates were not feeling well. Deputies responded and immediately recognized the inmate was likely having a stroke. Knowing time was of the essence, the deputies determined they did not have the luxury of waiting for an ambulance response. Within 9 minutes of being alerted of the emergency, the inmate was being loaded into a jail transport vehicle and then driven the short distance to the hospital. Doctors credit the Deputies for their quick thinking and reaction in likely preventing a much more severe outcome.
