Early this morning, at approximately 3:26 AM, the Commerce Police Department responded to a reported shooting at a party located in northeast part of the City and not on the campus of East Texas A&M.

The shooting event was an isolated incident and is no longer an active threat to the community. Multiple individuals sustained gunshot wounds as a result of the incident. Those injured are receiving medical attention.

The Commerce Police Department is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the involvement of those connected to the incident. Even though the event did not happen on campus, the University Police Department is assisting with the investigation, along with resources from the Texas Rangers.

Because this remains an active investigation, the amount of information that can be released is limited. No additional details regarding the identities or medical conditions of those involved are being released at this time.

Additional information will be released when appropriate and when doing so will not compromise the investigation.

If anyone has additional information about the event, please contact the Hunt County Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 903-457-2929.

PRESS RELEASE September 8, 2026

Commerce Police Department Partners with Texas DPS for Labor Day Traffic Safety Campaign

Commerce, Texas — September 8, 2026 — The Commerce Police Department (CPD) recently partnered with the Texas Department of Public Safety as part of the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) during the Labor Day traffic safety campaign.

The Labor Day holiday period traditionally brings increased traffic to Texas roadways. Through the STEP grant partnership, CPD officers conducted additional traffic enforcement with an emphasis on increasing visibility, encouraging safe driving behaviors, and reducing traffic crashes throughout the community.

During the Labor Day enforcement period, CPD officers worked additional grant-funded enforcement hours beyond their regularly scheduled duties. Those efforts resulted in 116 traffic stops.

The Commerce Police Department appreciates its continued partnership with the Texas Department of Public Safety and remains committed to keeping Commerce roadways safe for residents, visitors, students, and everyone traveling through our community.

CPD reminds motorists to:

· Always wear a seat belt and ensure all passengers are properly restrained.

· Never drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

· Avoid distracted driving, including texting while driving.

· Obey posted speed limits and adjust speed for traffic and roadway conditions.

· Remain alert, particularly in areas with increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

The Commerce Police Department will continue working with the Texas Department of Public Safety and other law-enforcement partners through the STEP program and other traffic-safety initiatives throughout the year.

Drive Safe. Buckle Up. Stay Focused. Help keep Commerce moving safely.
