28-Foot Inflatable Pumpkin Blown Across Wyoming, WYDOT Tracks It for 63 Miles

DOUGLAS, Wyo. - Wyoming transportation officials spent several hours Thursday tracking a 28-foot inflatable Halloween pumpkin after strong winds ripped it from a commercial display and carried it across more than 60 miles of eastern Wyoming.
The pumpkin disappeared shortly after 10 a.m. when mounting straps failed during a strong wind gust.

It was spotted approximately 20 minutes later crossing a county road. By noon, WYDOT employees were receiving reports of the pumpkin moving south across open prairie. Several motorists later reported seeing the inflatable pumpkin cross Interstate 25. It crossed I-25 twice.

Wyoming Highway Patrol attempted to intercept the pumpkin during its second crossing but abandoned the effort after a wind gust lifted it over a fence. β€œIt was moving faster than we expected,” one officer said.

Officials continued tracking the pumpkin through reports from motorists, ranchers and highway cameras. At one point it became lodged against a fence for approximately 17 minutes before freeing itself and continuing south. WYDOT estimates the pumpkin traveled at least 63 miles.

Shortly after 4 p.m., Wyoming officials lost visual contact with it near the state line. At approximately 4:15 p.m., authorities in Colorado reported seeing a very large inflatable pumpkin traveling south through an open field. Wyoming officials have closed the incident. It belongs to Colorado now.
