🚨 Important Safety Reminder for Comptche Residents 🚨
The Comptche Volunteer Fire Department has recently responded to multiple calls involving trees and lines down. During one recent call, 911 was contacted, but by the time the Fire Department arrived, a local resident had already cut the tree down.
Please DO NOT attempt to cut, or remove a tree that is in contact with any type of utility line. Even if the lines appear to be down or the power is out, they can be extremely dangerous.
⚡ Power lines and telecommunications lines can look very similar. There is no safe way to determine what type of line you are dealing with just by looking at it.
Treat ALL lines that are down on the ground as energized power lines.
Thankfully, no one was hurt during this recent incident, but it could have ended very differently.
⚡ If you come across a tree or utility line down:
• Call 911 immediately
• Stay at least 100 feet away and keep others away
• Do not cut, move, touch, or attempt to remove the tree or line
• Do not drive over or around a downed line
• Keep children and pets away from the area
• Do not attempt to put out a fire if you are in or near an electrical hazard area
• Wait for emergency personnel and the utility company to determine when the area is safe
🚗 If a power or utility line comes down on your vehicle:
Stay inside the vehicle and call 911. Do not allow anyone to approach the vehicle or attempt to touch the vehicle.
If you are involved in a vehicle accident and a line is down or has come into contact with your vehicle, stay inside unless there is an immediate danger such as fire or smoke.
If you must escape because of an immediate emergency, do not step out normally. Jump clear of the vehicle without touching the vehicle and the ground at the same time, then shuffle away from the vehicle with your feet together.
Please don't put yourself or someone else in danger trying to help. Your first priority should be to get to a safe distance and call 911.
When in doubt, stay back and call 911
