Brandon Russell for Commissioner Brandon is running for St. Mary's County Commissioner to represent District Two. (Authority: Brandon Russell for Commissioner, Paul Quade Jr., Treasurer)

I’m passionate about making sure we have access to resources in St. Mary’s.

We’ve struggled to attract health professionals for years. The federal government has designated the county as a mental health professional shortage area, a topic I’ve covered previously through Informed St. Mary's.

I know we can do better, and when I’m elected—we will.

The Comprehensive Plan, “St. Mary’s 2050,” will guide growth over the next two decades. We can’t afford to get this wrong, and based on the changes made by the current Commissioners—it seems we’re headed that way.

When I’m elected, I’ll immediately push to amend the plan if the current board adopts it.

It’s important who we elect this year, because the zoning laws are under review next. I’m serious about preserving our rural character, stopping urban sprawl, and attracting the development this county needs—like recreation and entertainment businesses.

This year, because it’s in

I’m thankful to have the support of my friend Steve Tuttle Community Advocate for St. Mary’s County.

Steve’s dedication to this community is inspiring. His work on behalf of the homeless, pushing for the animal shelter, and as a member of the Tri-County Council has made St. Mary’s better.

This letter was in last week’s edition of The Enterprise. I’m glad Steve is standing with our campaign. This November, it’s .

The St. Mary's County NAACP held a wonderful Jazz Brunch yesterday celebrating the 7025’s 80th Anniversary!

I was moved by the speakers, the community remembers recognized, and hearing about all the amazing work being done to lift people up in this county.

I’m proud to have been a sponsor of this event, and to continue to work with the NAACP 7025 in their mission of improving the educational, social, economic, and political equality of all people.

Grab a copy of this week’s edition of The County Times and you’ll see my ad, pictured below! There’s also a section where Commissioner candidates from each race answered four questions.

Here are my responses:

1. Why should the voters choose you for election (re-reelection)?

Answer: I’m running because it’s time for change. I’ll enact planning policies that protect our rural character, make life more affordable for young professionals and seniors, and shift tax burdens from residents to big corporations. I’m not running to protect the status quo, and I won’t ignore the community’s voices.

2. Should the county have a moratorium on and/or ban data centers and/or cannabis manufacturing facilities.

Answer: The county should have had a ban on data centers a year ago, as soon as news broke about plans in Calvert and Charles Counties. State law prevents the county from banning cannabis facilities, but they could be more strictly regulated to minimize adverse impacts, something I’ll do when elected.

3. Is the county growing too fast or not fast enough?

Answer: The county isn’t growing properly. Development districts have expanded rather than encouraging infill and adaptive reuse. That increases urban sprawl and reduces rural preservation. I won’t expand development districts, and I’ll prioritize creating master plans for town centers to give residents a voice in what they want in their area.

4. What should be the priorities for the funding the county provides for education?

Answer: Educators work tirelessly to keep student success first priority. Success means having the necessary staff, materials, and infrastructure. St. Mary’s ranks 23 out of 24 for per pupil funding in the State. I’ll work to improve that, while partnering with the Board of Education to advocate at the State level.

Please join me for Candidate Forums tonight at Lexington Park Library. I’ll be participating in the Commissioner District 2 forum, and I look forward to hearing your questions!

Remember, local elections are important and we need to elect the best person for each role. These forums give voters a chance to hear directly from the candidates and are a great way to be informed.

See you there!

This is a big deal—the final chance to offer your feedback before approval. The Commissioners made several changes, many of which eliminated requirements for them to take action on things like infrastructure, housing, and more.

Don’t sit this out—this is our county’s future.

The public’s final chance to weigh in on the St. Mary’s 2050 Comprehensive Plan is TODAY, October 6 at 6:30pm in Leonardtown.
